Shooting: An ever-present but ever-evolving discipline
Shooting is one of the original nine events included in the first edition of the revived Games in Athens in 1896. At that edition of the Games, there were five shooting events, all open only to men. Precise parameters for the shooting event often changed over the next few years, and when a shotgun category was introduced in 1900, live pigeons were released as targets. This soon changed and the skeet shooting event uses ‘clay pigeons’ released at different angles and speeds by machines. Shooting events were open to both men women between 1968 and 1980, and then in 1984, a separate women’s event was inaugurated. The number of shooting events has varied throughout the history of the Modern Games; the 2020 Games in Tokyo will give competitors a chance to showcase their skills in a total of fifteen events, with the rifle and pistol events taking place indoors and the shotgun events outside. Many sportspeople have to rely to varying extents on strength or stamina to win, but shooting requires different attributes, in particular perfect steadiness, which can only be achieved by training the body to slow the heartbeat and the brain to fire between beats. An interesting additional team attending the 2020 Games in Tokyo
The 2020 Games in Tokyo will welcome refugee athletes as competitors in some events, and Shooting is one of them – a team of three refugees are being coached and trained by a former gold medallist and are hoping to reach the required minimum standard to be selected as part of a team of refugee competitors or in order to join a national team at the Asaka Shooting Range on the outskirts of Tokyo. The venue in Asaka is one of the few 2020 venues to have hosted the same events in the 1964 edition of the Games. What are you waiting for?
