Tom Hanks tour dates
Best known for his roles in movies like Sleepless in Seattle and The Green Mile, Tom Hanks is one of the most beloved actors in Hollywood. He has won two Oscars. One was in 1994 for Philadelphia, and the other was in 1995 for his role as Forest Gump. He has also received nominations for three other Oscars.
In addition to his acting, Hanks has also recently written a book, Uncommon Type, featuring short stories about immigrants, professional sports and an eccentric billionaire.
Uncommon Type has managed to secure spots on the New York Times Best Sellers list and the Amazon Best Sellers list. This is no suprise, as his short story editor is his friend the esteemed writer Nora Ephron.
Tom Hanks's background
The son of a hospital worker and a cook, Hanks grew up moving from town to town in California. He credits his nontraditional upbringing for providing plenty of fodder for his writing.
He eventually went to acting school at California State University before moving to New York City in 1979. It was here that he got his first on-screen part in a slasher movie called He Knows You're Alone.
Hanks's first big break came in 1981, playing Kip Wilson in the ABC show Bosom Buddies. Since then, Hanks has starred in more than 50 movies. He has director and producer credits. He has also starred in Broadway plays.
Hanks's first Oscar was for the role of Andrew Beckett in Philadelphia. The movie shed light on the HIV and AIDS epidemic of the 1980s and 1990s and the discrimination against those afflicted with the diseases and the homosexual community.
He is known for his talents as a comedic actor and as a dramatic one -- and for straddling the boundaries between the two. He also received a nomination for his part in the comedy Big about a young boy who wishes he were older.
Tom Hanks's biggest hits
Nearly every movie featuring Hanks has been a hit. Some of his biggest movies include Saving Private Ryan, Toy Story, Turner and Hooch, Big and Splash.
Many actors and book reviewers agree that Hanks's writing skills equal his acting ones. Fellow comedian Steve Martin praised Hanks's book, saying, "It turns out that Tom Hanks is also a wise and hilarious writer with an endlessly surprising mind. Damn it." Writer Ann Patchett said, "Reading Tom Hanks's Uncommon Type is like finding out that Alice Munro is also the greatest actress of our time."
