More than four decades after its release, The Last Waltz, director Martin Scorsese's on-screen capture of the Band's epic Thanksgiving show of 1976, is still considered by many to be the greatest concert film ever made.
The Tribute to The Last Waltz is a series of concerts that pay homage to that musical extravaganza of November 25, 1976, held at the historic Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco and billed as the Band's "farewell concert appearance." Led by bassist/producer by Don Was and musical director Warren Haynes, the bill features Michael McDonald, Dave Malone, Terrence Higgins, Ivan Neville, Mark Mullins, John Medeski, Bob Margolin and Jamey Johnson. The program also touts the original horn arrangements from the Winterland show by late songwriter/arranger/musician Allen Toussaint.
The inaugural Tribute to The Last Waltz event was staged at New Orleans' famed Saenger Theatre in 2016. Was and Haynes, the longtime Allman Brothers guitarist and founding member of the jam band Gov't Mule, brought in heavyweights like Michael McDonald from the Doobie Brothers, Ivan and Cyril Neville of the Neville Brothers, and keyboardist John Medeski of Medeski Martin & Wood.
