About Twenty One Pilots

Twenty One Pilots is an American musical duo from Columbus, Ohio, built around frontman Tyler Joseph and drummer Josh Dun. Formed in 2009 by Joseph alongside bassist Nick Thomas and drummer Chris Salih, the project started as a three-piece playing clubs and basement venues across central Ohio. After Thomas and Salih departed in 2011, Joseph and Dun continued as a duo and signed with Fueled by Ramen in 2012. Their label debut, Vessel (2013), reached No. 21 on the Billboard 200 and became the second album in history to have every track certified at least gold. The duo's sound defies easy categorization, pulling from alternative rock, electropop, hip-hop, pop, reggae, and more, with Joseph shifting between rapping, singing, and screaming over Dun's high-energy drumming.

Blurryface (2015) launched the duo into mainstream dominance, debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and becoming the first album ever to earn at least a gold certification on every track from the RIAA. The single "Stressed Out" peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned a 13x Platinum certification, while "Ride" and "Heathens" each achieved Diamond status. With "Heathens" and "Ride" both charting in the top five of the Hot 100 simultaneously, Twenty One Pilots became the first alternative act and only the third rock act in chart history to accomplish that feat, joining the Beatles and Elvis Presley. The duo has released eight studio albums to date and tallied 14 number-one songs on the Alternative Airplay chart, tying with Linkin Park for the second-most all time.

Live, Twenty One Pilots shows are a full-body experience. Joseph performs in masks and body paint while Dun launches into backflips off his drum kit. The duo's set pieces have included vertical crowd-surfing, suspended bridge walks, and scaffolding climbs that turn arenas into obstacle courses. That theatrical energy, layered over a catalog spanning concept albums about the fictional world of Trench and the city of Dema, gives every show a narrative weight that goes beyond a standard concert.

Who are the members of Twenty One Pilots?

Twenty One Pilots is a duo consisting of Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun. Joseph handles lead vocals, keyboards, piano, synthesizers, ukulele, bass, and guitar. Dun plays drums, percussion, and trumpet, and provides backing vocals. The project originally included two additional members when it formed in 2009: bassist Nick Thomas and drummer Chris Salih. Both departed in 2011, with Salih recommending Dun (formerly a touring drummer for House of Heroes) as his replacement. Joseph and Dun have operated as a two-piece ever since, occasionally bringing in touring musicians for live shows.

What are Twenty One Pilots' most popular songs?

Twenty One Pilots' catalog spans over a decade and multiple eras, with several tracks crossing into mainstream pop territory. Their most recognized songs include:
  • "Stressed Out," certified 13x Platinum, peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and surpassing 3 billion views on YouTube
  • "Heathens," from the Suicide Squad soundtrack, also reaching No. 2 on the Hot 100 and earning Diamond certification
  • "Ride," peaking at No. 5 on the Hot 100 and earning Diamond certification
  • "Holding On to You," their first charting single, reaching No. 10 on the Billboard US Rock Airplay chart
  • "Car Radio," performed at the 2014 MTV Movie Awards
  • "Level of Concern," whose never-ending music video was certified by Guinness World Records as the longest music video in history
  • "Jumpsuit," "Shy Away," and "Overcompensate," lead singles from Trench, Scaled and Icy, and Clancy respectively

What awards has Twenty One Pilots won?

Twenty One Pilots' breakthrough era produced a significant collection of major industry awards. Their most notable accolades include:
  • Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for "Stressed Out" at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards in 2017
  • Top Rock Album and Top Rock Artist at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards for Blurryface
  • Favorite Pop/Rock Duo and Favorite Alternative Rock Artist at the 2016 American Music Awards
The Grammy win produced one of the ceremony's more memorable moments: Joseph and Dun accepted the award in their underwear, honoring a promise the two had made to each other when they were still playing small Columbus venues.

What is the Twenty One Pilots Skeleton Clique?

The Skeleton Clique, often shortened to the Clique, is the name of Twenty One Pilots' fan community. The name references the band's longstanding use of skeleton imagery across performances, album art, and music videos. The Clique is represented in official band iconography by logos featuring a skull and alien head. The fanbase has a track record of large-scale community projects: in November 2016, the Wood Green tube station in London was covered in over 100 panels of fan-created artwork during the Emotional Roadshow World Tour. A fan art exhibition titled "Artopia" was held at Nationwide Arena in Columbus during the Tour De Columbus shows in 2017. Columbus itself temporarily renamed Nationwide Boulevard to Twenty One Pilots Boulevard to mark two hometown arena shows. The Clique's energy at live events is a significant part of the Twenty One Pilots concert experience, with organized fan chants and coordinated visual displays that feed directly into the band's theatrical stage production.
