Twist Your Dickens Washington, D.C.'s history
Twist Your Dickens is an adaptation of the 1843 classic A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. It focuses on Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly businessman who claims to hate Christmas. He confronts his past, present and future via a series of visits by ghosts. The book has been adapted into several popular movies, such as a Disney cartoon version and The Muppet Christmas Carol. The Christmas theme and moral message of the story make it a family favorite. The book has been performed as a play since the 19th century.
Twist Your Dickens was written by a pair of comedy writers who met while working on TV show The Colbert Report: Peter Gwinn and Bobby Mort. Gwinn, who grew up in Illinois, is a former member of The Second City, while Mort is an Emmy winner for his work on The Colbert Report. The pair have also worked together as improv coaches. They used a sketch-writing technique called The Deconstruction to find the humor in the original Charles Dickens book. Unlike other adaptations of A Christmas Carol, this show isn't suitable for children, thanks to its mature language and content.
Twist Your Dickens is a modernized, satirical version of the traditional tale, with an element of improvisation as the cast call out for suggestions from the audience. The original cast at LA's Kirk Douglas Theatre featured many Second City alumni, including Frank Caeti, Larry Joe Campbell, Dan Castellaneta and Ron West. Between them, their credits include MADtv, Weeds and 3rd Rock From The Sun. The original production was directed by Marc Warzecha, a resident director at The Second City. Twist Your Dickens is now performed in several cities each December, as it fast becomes a festive tradition for comedy fans.
The Second City's history spans over 50 years, during which stars ranging from Bill Murray to Steve Carell have been trained by its team of comedy coaches. Although it began in Chicago, there are now Second City comedy clubs and schools in Toronto and Los Angeles too.
