Their team put together a stellar 40-19 mark that campaign, which included a spectacular NCAA Tournament run. It was highlighted by two wins over powerhouse UCLA at the NCAA Softball Regionals Louisville while going 3-1 at that competition. The last victory was especially dramatic as Whitney Fletcher raced around the bases in the bottom of the 13th inning for a game-winning RBI triple. UAB won, 3-2. That extended contest kept fans on the edge of their seats for four hours and 26 minutes. The Blazers followed that historic win with a pair of close losses to Florida, 4-3 and 1-0, at the NCAA Super Regionals.
How has the UAB Blazers softball team performed the last few years?In recent years, the UAB Blazers has been unable to recreate the magic of that 2013 campaign, going 32-27 in 2014 and 32-19 in 2015 before falling below .500 in 2016 and remaining there ever since. The 2014 campaign was the most recent one that resulted in a postseason appearance for the Blazers. UAB went 1-2 at the NCAA Softball Regionals Athens.
How often do the UAB Blazers play home softball games?Thanks to the temperate weather in Birmingham in February and March, as compared to much of the country, the UAB Blazers get to play at home a considerable number of times. In 2020, the team was scheduled to play host to two multiple-team invitational tournaments, the Blazer Classic from Feb. 21-23 and the UAB Tournament from March 6-8. The former one even included high-profile teams such as Ole Miss and Oklahoma State. After Conference USA action starts in March, the team generally plays on its home field every other weekend.
Which teams are in Conference USA along with the UAB Blazers?The schools that the UAB Blazers softball team competes with for conference honors are Charlotte, Florida International University, Florida Atlantic, Louisiana Tech, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, Southern Miss, University of Texas at El Paso, University of Texas at San Antonio and Western Kentucky University. In 2019, Louisiana Tech claimed the Conference USA Softball Championship, defeating Marshall, 3-1, in that tournament’s title game.
