More recently, the team advanced to the quarterfinal round in 2019 before falling in a hard-fought 1-0 away loss to Wake Forest. The school’s season starts in late August and runs through, at a minimum, early November. An NCAA Tournament run, which often includes games in Santa Barbara, can take the campaign into December. In 2019, 9,748 attended their rivalry contest in Santa Barbara while an even larger crowd of 11,075 attended their matchup later that season in San Luis Obispo, Calif., the 14th-largest regular-season crowd in NCAA history. UCSB won both those meetings to beat its rival twice in one season for the first time since 2006.
How did the 2006 UC Santa Barbara Gauchos win the national championship?The 2006 Gauchos completed their regular season with an underwhelming 12-7-0 record before turning it on when it most mattered. Wins over San Diego State, SMU, Old Dominion and Northwestern sent the team to the NCAA Men’s College Cup. The first and fourth of those matches were played in Santa Barbara. In St. Louis, the Gauchos and Wake Forest played to a 0-0 scoreline before UCSB prevailed in the ensuing penalty shootout, 4-3. A 2-1 win over the UCLA Bruins completed the job.
