Ugly God's background
Born Royce Davison in Indiana, Ugly God grew up listening to artists such as Project Pat, Ying Yang Twins and R. Kelly. He started making beats on the table from an early age, but did not start rapping and producing until his late teens.
While in high school, Ugly God released his lyrically crude debut single, "I Beat My Meat," through SoundCloud but took it down after receiving complaints from his high school. After graduating, he enrolled in a computer engineering degree at the University of Southern Mississippi. During his studies, he re-uploaded "I Beat My Meat" to SoundCloud and amassed millions of plays worldwide. After dropping out of university, he founded the Little Dick Clique and went on to record with artists such as Wintertime and Famous Dex.
In March 2016, Ugly God released the track "Water" through SoundCloud. The song quickly went viral and caught the attention of record label Asylum Records. After signing to the label, Ugly God released "Water" as a digital download in November 2016. The single debuted at No. 100 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in January 2017 before climbing to No. 80 the following month. It also peaked at No. 34 on the U.S. Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
After releasing several further promotional singles, Ugly God dropped his debut mixtape, The Booty Tape, in August 2017. The mixtape amassed 12,000 sales and streams in its first week and charted in several countries, peaking at No. 27 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, No. 18 on the U.S. Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and No. 2 on the New Zealand Heatseekers Albums chart. Prior to releasing The Booty Tape, Ugly God released the single "No Lies," featuring Wiz Khalifa.
