The team played in the Athletic League of New England States until 1922. After a period as an independent team, the Minutemen joined the Yankee Conference in 1947. UMass also has a rivalry with Boston College that is more than 100 years old. The teams have met 26 times, but UMass has won only five of those games.

In 1998, 1999 and 2003, the Minutemen were Atlantic 10 Conference Champions and seldom lost a game. Fans point to many great memories in the 2003 season, including safety Shannon James returning a fumbled Villanova snap 39 yards to beat the Wildcats 19-14.
