The UNC Wilmington Seahawks play in the Colonial Athletic Association which has been one of the best mid-major conferences in all of college hoops since it was first founded back in 1979. Basketball has always been a big deal in the conference as it was originally founded as the ECAC South basketball league and only began sponsoring football in 2005. There are currently ten universities participating in the Colonial Athletic Conference: the Charleston Cougars, the Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens, the Drexel Dragons, the Elon Phoenix, the Hofstra Pride, the James Madison Dukes, the Northeastern Huskies, the Towson Tigers, the University of North Carolina – Wilmington Seahawks, and the William & Mary Tribe.
