Created in 2006, Vampire Weekend is one of the most popular purveyors of independent rock and pop in the world. The band's distinctive style is rounded out by an infusion of punk and sounds from different parts of the world as well. The name Vampire Weekend derives from the plot of a short horror film lead singer Ezra Koenig planned to make in college but soon abandoned. The band performs its own original material and does covers of popular songs from Bruce Springsteen, Radiohead and others.
Ivy League Act
Vampire Weekend is the result of a deep and lasting collaboration between four college students - Ezra Koenig, Chris Baio, Chris Tomson and Rostam Batmanglij - who met while attending Columbia University. After they graduated from school, the band recorded an extended play album in 2007 while still holding down full-time jobs. Vampire Weekend released its self-titled album a year later on January 29, 2008, to instant acclaim. The album reached a peak position of No. 17 on the US chart and received a platinum certification from the RIAA. The song "A-Punk" proved to be a major breakout hit for them. The band's three subsequent albums, Contra in 2010, Modern Vampires of the City in 2013 and Father of the Bride in 2019, all reached No. 1 on the US and rock charts. Modern Vampires of the City won the 2014 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album while Contra received a nomination from the same category in 2011. Vampire Weekend has also received nominations from the BRIT Awards, the American Music Awards, the MTV Video Music Awards and the NME Awards. Vampire Weekend is ubiquitous on the festival and events circuit. It has played at Lollapalooza, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, the Austin City Limits Music Festival, the Governors Ball Music Festival and the BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend. Its performance at Coachella 2008 was also a major watershed moment for the band. Its first studio album had only just come out as the lineup was revealed, and Vampire Weekend was still considered a small act at the time.
