A diverse global city on Canada's west coast, Vancouver is a first-rate destination for tourism and live entertainment. Famous attractions in the city include Stanley Park, a sprawling outdoor treasure; the awe-inspiring Capilano Suspension Bridge; and the many fine museums and cultural institutions, including one of the best aquariums in the world. Visitors and locals also enjoy a huge array of options for live events, which range from stage plays and opera to exciting ice-hockey action.
The annual events calendar in Vancouver is packed with a diverse range of festivals, including the annual TED Conference, the three-week PuSh International Performing Arts Festival in January, the Vancouver Fringe Festival in September and the two-week Vancouver International Film Festival, also in September. From June through September, Bard on the Beach presents Shakespeare plays throughout the city, while Theatre Under the Stars brings more live summer shows to the Malkin Bowl in Stanley Park. The Vancouver Folk Music Festival comes to the city in July, and the Vancouver International Jazz Festival takes place over 12 days in late-June/early-July. The city's major performing arts companies, among them the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Opera and City Opera of Vancouver, present shows year-round.
Sports fans know Vancouver as the home of the NHL's Vancouver Canucks, who play at Rogers Arena, and the CFL's BC Lions, who play at BC Place Stadium. Vancouver is also a hub for competitive cycling, hosting the Global Relay Gastown Grand Prix since 1973, as well as the UBC Grand Prix.
In addition to its sports stadiums and arenas, Vancouver's larger venues include the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, which hosts Broadway musicals and big concerts. The Orpheum Theatre presents comedy shows, bands and musicians in a more intimate setting.
