Velvet Underground - Legendary Venue Resurrected

Located on Queen Street West in the heart of Toronto, Velvet Underground is an iconic performance venue that reopened its doors to the public in 2016.

Velvet Underground History

Velvet Underground first established itself as a goth venue that hosted dance parties in the 1990s. While the venue came to be known for hosting new wave and retro dance events, it also booked metal, punk and goth bands. In 2015, Liberty Entertainment Group, which owned and operated the nightclub, decided to shut down the venue citing piling losses. It was then taken over by Embrace Presents, who renovated the space as a live music venue. The club was reopened in the beginning of 2016 with a performance by Trust, a Canadian dystopian-pop outfit.

Velvet Underground Events

The venue is best known for hosting Alanis Morissette's launch party for her hit album "Jagged Little Pills." However, after renovation and reopening in 2016, the club shifted its focus to live acts in pop, dance and alt-rock space. Some notable artists who have performed at the venue include Blank Banshee, Art of Anarchy and Wolf Eyes. It is a general admission venue with standing room for close to 400 fans. The former industrial club has retained the goth vibe of its former self after renovation. The small venue has trusted brands when it comes to sound and light equipment, including PA systems by Shure and Sennheiser. Given the limited capacity of the iconic venue, it is advisable to book tickets quickly for your favorite act.
