Under encouragement from his father to learn to play banjo and guitar, he had an early start. He also managed to pick up the bass, mandolin, dobro and fiddle. In high school, he started playing in a bluegrass band called Mountain Smoke, and he just kept going up from there. As word got out about his talent, invitations started coming in to play with other bands. He jumped around from group to group, gaining experience. As a solo artist, he started seeing widespread success in the 1980s. His career skyrocketed even further in the 1990s.
