Pontiff Jr. captained the LSU baseball team and was a Major League Baseball draft selection at the time of his death. He died of complications with a heart abnormality. In 2004, his family established the baseball classic and a golf tournament in his memory. Proceeds from the Classic go to benefit children's charities in the New Orleans area via the Wally Pontiff, Jr. Foundation, which benefits various charities and scholarships across south Louisiana. What began as a positive spin on the established rivalry between the two big-name schools in the state has grown in importance as both teams developed into powerhouses.
