Washington State University honored Coach George Raveling in 2019 by hanging his name in the rafters of Beasley Coliseum. He became the basketball team’s first African-American head coach in 1972 and led the Cougars to the NCAA Tournaments in 1980 and 1983. Before 1980, the team had not been in the national championship tournament since 1941. Coach Raveling brought the team to 167 wins and acted as assistant coach for the 1984 Olympic basketball team, which won the gold medal that year.
