The West Virginia Black Bears are the Class-A Short Season affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The team was formed through relocation when the Jamestown Jammers moved to Morgantown, West Virginia. The Jammers were created through expansion in 1994 as an affiliate for the Detroit Tigers. The Jammers experienced occasional success during their run in Jamestown and were affiliated with four different Major League organizations before the Pirates became the parent organization in 2013. During the franchise's 21 seasons in Jamestown, they only made five postseason appearances. Not only did the team's location change in 2014 but so did their fortune. With the relocation to Morgantown and the assumption of a new name, the Black Bears won the New York Penn League Championship in their first season in their new home. The 2015 squad put up a 42-34 record, good for third overall in the New York-Penn League. The Black Bears are just coming off a season where they went 40-36. Monongalia County Ballpark is the home of the West Virginia Blackbears and the West Virginia University Mountaineers. The two squads have shared the stadium since it opened in 2015. The 3,500-seat stadium actually sits in a town called Granville, directly across the Monongahela River from WVU's campus. The concession stands offer typical ballpark foods along with some regional favorites such as pepperoni roles. In addition to the standard seating bowl, the Monongalia County Ballpark also offers seating on a party deck and a home run porch that overlooks the Black Bears' bullpen and an area known as the "Backyard." It's a spot in right-center field where the fence is chain link and the seats are outdoor couches and lawn chairs are covered by umbrellas. However, he was called to active duty in the Middle East in 2008 where he spent four years.
