Wharton Center

The Wharton Center opened in 1982 with a performance by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. In 1986, Dreamgirls was the first Broadway show to spend a week at this venue, and the hall has hosted an impressive lineup of theater performances since then. Broadway shows to play here include Cats, Hamilton, Fiddler on the Roof and Miss Saigon. Cobb Great Hall holds 2,254 patrons on two levels. The Pasant Theatre has 585 seats on one level.

Can you tell me about the food and drink offerings?

Small snacks and non-alcoholic drinks are available for purchase during programs at the Wharton Center. Except for bottled water, food and drinks must be kept in the lobby. An assortment of restaurants, including Wings Over East Lansing, Tamaki Restaurant and Japanese Kitchen, and Bowl Express, are available along East Grand River Avenue.

Is the Wharton Center accessible by public transportation?

The EBD Wilson past Bogue bus stop is just outside the Wharton Center. The CATA 31 and 36 bus lines use this stop.

Is there on-site parking?

There are four parking areas near the Wharton Center. The ramp near the Wharton Center, the Fee Hall Surface Lot and the 4-H Children's Garden Surface Lot are available during most events. For evening and weekend events, the Shaw Ramp is another option. Parking rates vary depending on the event.

Are there other entertainment options nearby?

The MSU Auditorium Building, also on the campus of the school, hosts additional fine arts events. This venue includes the MSU Concert Auditorium and the Fairchild Theatre. You can also watch a college basketball game at the Breslin Center, a football game at Spartan Stadium, a hockey game at Munn Ice Arena or volleyball match at Jenison Field House.

Should I call a sitter, or can I bring the young ones along?

Children must be at least five years of age to attend most events at the Wharton Center. Some performances make exceptions for preschoolers, but you'll need to get a sitter for your baby. All patrons, regardless of age, must have their own tickets.

Is the Wharton Center a wheelchair-friendly facility?

Accessible seating is available in both theaters of the Wharton Center. In Cobb Great Hall, all wheelchair seating is found on the orchestra level. Elevators and accessible restrooms are available as well. The venue also offers sign language services, audio descriptions, open captioning and sensory-friendly performances at select times. Assistive listening devices are available at all shows.
