About White Rabbit Red Rabbit
White Rabbit Red Rabbit is an internationally acclaimed play written by Nassim Soleimanpour, an award-winning Iranian playwright. At 29 years old, Soleimanpour was forbidden to leave his country and used the situation to his advantage by writing about his experience of isolation – the result of which is this unique stage work. Since its premiere, White Rabbit Red Rabbit has been translated into several different languages and performs around the globe.
In 2011, White Rabbit Red Rabbit had a joint premiere at the SummerWorks Performance Festival in Canada and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland. It has been awarded the Dublin Fringe Festival Best New Performance, the SummerWorks Outstanding New Performance Text Award and The Arches Brick Award (Edinburgh Festival Fringe), as well as being nominated for a Total Theatre and Brighton Fringe Pick of Edinburgh Award.
This play is shrouded in mystery, as little about it has been revealed to anyone in advance, including the actors themselves. In fact, there is a different actor for every performance and the actor is handed the previously unseen script (which is waiting in a sealed envelope) just before going on stage. There are no rehearsals, there is no assistance from a director and there is no set. The audience and the performer learn what the play is about together as the script is being read and the story unravels in real time.
White Rabbit Red Rabbit has been described as both entertaining and thought-provoking because it asks hugely important questions of the audience about the nature of life itself. Since the play never features the same actor twice, no audience can see the same show twice.
