Wicked San Francisco schedule
Loosely based on Gregory Maguire's novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, Wicked is a surprise-filled musical prequel to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Wicked's alternative take on the well-known characters of Oz follows the pre-Dorothy years of Elphaba and Galinda, better known as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good.
Wicked sets up the events of a literary classic while presenting a story that puts familiar characters in an entirely new light. Combining a unique plot with a clever script, intriguing sets and memorable songs, this musical explores an unexpected friendship and the meaning of good and evil.
Wicked's San Francisco schedule is part of the hit musical's larger North American tour, which brings the show to audiences across the continent. Along with San Francisco, stops on this Wicked tour include New York, Florida, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Wicked's history
In 1995, Gregory Maguire told the story of Oz from the perspective of its well-known witches in his novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. This revision takes on the years before Dorothy's arrival, and became the basis for the 2003 musical adaptation. Music and lyrics for Wicked were created by Stephen Schwartz, with the book by Winnie Holzman. The original Broadway production was led by Idina Menzel as Elphaba and Kristin Chenoweth as Galinda.
Wicked's coming-of-age story
Wicked begins with the meeting of two very different young women -- the bubbly blonde Galinda and smart but unfortunately green-skinned Elphaba. Forced to be roommates at the school Shiz, their personalities and priorities immediately clash. Galinda and Elphaba eventually form a tentative friendship as Galinda helps Elphaba become more popular and Elphaba takes Galinda to a coveted meeting with the wizard. Their friendship is split apart, as Elphaba's disenchantment with the Wizard's treatment of talking animals causing her to be labeled as "wicked" and made an outcast.
The two future witches of Oz are permanently separated as each pursues what she believes is the best route to changing Oz's problems. Before parting, Galinda and Elphaba both acknowledge they've made mistakes during their rocky friendship, but also that they've grown and changed as a result of knowing each other.
The Wicked musical experience
Wicked quickly transports its audiences to the magical world of Oz. Eye-catching sets, elaborate costumes and a compelling story take viewers with Elphaba and Galinda as they experience the wonders of Oz, from the traditional school Shiz to the glow and glitz of the Emerald City. Wicked features an intriguing tale highlighted by catchy songs and memorable lyrics, but is far more than simple entertainment with its new and thought-provoking take on a classic story.
Wicked's noteworthy awards
In 2016, Wicked became the 10th longest-running Broadway show with its 5,124th performance. The Broadway production, as well as the London and two North American touring productions, have all experienced record-breaking sales. The original Broadway production of the musical won three Tony Awards and six Drama Desk Awards, as well as a Grammy Awards for its cast album.
