Wicked, formally titled Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz, is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman. Loosely adapted from Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel, the show reimagines the world of L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by following the unlikely friendship between Elphaba, a misunderstood young woman with green skin who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda, the bubbly, popular student who becomes Glinda the Good. Set before and after Dorothy's arrival in Oz, the story traces how their contrasting worldviews, a shared love interest, and their reactions to the Wizard's corrupt regime shape their very different destinies.
Wicked premiered on Broadway at the Gershwin Theatre in October 2003, following pre-Broadway tryouts at San Francisco's Curran Theatre earlier that year. The original cast featured Idina Menzel as Elphaba, Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda, Norbert Leo Butz as Fiyero, and Joel Grey as the Wizard. The production surpassed $1 billion in total Broadway revenue in 2016, joining The Phantom of the Opera and The Lion King as the only shows to reach that milestone. In 2017, it surpassed The Phantom of the Opera to become Broadway's second-highest grossing musical. A long-running West End production at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in London and multiple North American tours have brought the show to millions of fans worldwide.
