Wigan Athletic Tickets
Wigan Athletic – new kids on the block
Founded in 1932, Wigan Athletic are relative newcomers to the world of professional football. They might have been latecomers but they prospered in their regional leagues, winning titles and honours all through their history as a non-professional club. It wasn’t until 1982 that they secured their place in the Fourth Division. It was a big step from the regional to the national, but one they took in their stride. In 2013 they showed their mettle when they beat Manchester City in the FA Cup Final at Wembley stadium. Buy Wigan Athletic tickets on StubHub to cheer on this remarkable team.
A difficult birth
The club’s initial formation was no easy matter – the town of Wigan had already made several attempts to establish a football club. The list of prototype teams included Wigan United, Wigan County, Wigan Town and, finally, Wigan Borough, who represented the town from 1920 until their demise in 1931. Wigan was determined to have its own team, however, and it was the mayor himself who called the public meeting from which Wigan Athletic was formed. The turning point for the club was the arrival of David Whelan as owner in 1995. A former footballer himself, whose career was ended by a serious injury on the pitch, he purchased the club and built a new DW stadium, which can seat 25,000 fans. He set the team’s sights on Premier League Football, a seemingly impossible achievement for a club that had only recently entered the Fourth Division. However, a few short years later, in 2005, they realised their owner's dream. Since then their fortunes have followed the path of many football clubs, which are beset with triumphs and disappointments. Now you too can share that dream when you buy and sell Wigan Athletic tickets on StubHub.
A high-achieving club
Wigan Athletic have partnered with the charity Mind to increase awareness of mental health issues, an example of how football works for its community. The game arouses immense passion in its fans – supporters are intensely loyal to their clubs and follow them through the good times and the bad. One Wigan Athletic fan even promised to walk backwards for a 58-mile charity trek if Wigan beat Aston Villa FC by three goals. They did, and he kept his promise. In their comparatively short life as a football club Wigan Athletic have achieved an enormous amount, and with the grit and determination they have always displayed will no doubt achieve much more.
