Straddling the boundaries between alternative rock and country, and with occasional forays into psychedelic rock and soul, Wilco has created a pleasing, laconic, laidback sound that has garnered the devotion of fans worldwide. The name of the band comes from an abbreviation of the term "will comply," which is commonly used on military and aviation radio. In addition to its own material, Wilco has also collaborated with Billy Bragg, The Minus 5 and 7 Worlds Collide on their albums.
Wilco is the brainchild of singer and guitarist Jeff Tweedy. Following the dissolution of his country band Uncle Tupelo, Tweedy set out to form his own band with most of the former members of Uncle Tupelo intact. After signing with Reprise Records, a subsidiary of Warner Brothers, Wilco released its debut album, A.M., on March 28th, 1995. Two years later, the band's sophomore album, Being There, cracked the top 100 on the US charts. Both of the album's singles, "Outtasite (Outta Mind)" and "Can't Stand It," charted on the US Adult Alternatives list. The launch of its fourth album, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, which peaked at No. 13 in 2001, brought the band even greater mainstream attention. That set the stage for a string of top-selling albums, including A Ghost Is Born in 2004, Sky Blue Sky in 2007, Wilco (The Album) in 2009 and The Whole Love in 2011, all of which peaked in the top 10 in the US. A Ghost Is Born earned a Best Alternative Music Album and Best Recording Package from the 2005 Grammy Awards. Since then, the band has received Grammy nominations for Best Rock Album, Best Americana Album and a second nod toward Best Alternative Music Album. Wilco's collaboration with Billy Bragg on Mermaid Avenue earned it a Grammy Award nomination for Best Contemporary Folk Album. The band would reteam with Billy Bragg for Mermaid Avenue Vol. II in 2000 and Mermaid Avenue: The Complete Sessions in 2012. On the festival circuit, Wilco made waves at Lollapalooza 2006 and 2008 as one of the headlining acts.
