Open since February 1928, Williams Arena is one of the oldest arenas in the country. Home to the University of Minnesota Men's and Women's Golden Gophers Basketball, is located right on campus in southeast Minneapolis. It is locally known as "The Barn" because of its resemblance to a farm building, and the student section of the venue is called "The Barnyard." The Golden Gophers belong to the NCAA Big Ten Conference. The playing floor is unique in that it is raised approximately 2 feet off the ground. This means that the benches, officials' tables and even first-row fans are seated below the floor. This, along with its arched, airline hangar-style roof, gives Williams Arena an old-school charm.
