The Wisconsin Badgers wrestling team was established in 1911 and immediately began making a name for itself in Big 10 wrestling. The 1970s proved an exceptional decade for Badgers wrestling with the teams finishing each season, 1971-1972, with a greater than .639 winning average. In 1974, Rick Lawinger became the Badgers’ first-ever NCAA champion with an 8-2 win over Oklahoma State’s Steve Randall. The 1970s would yield a total of six NCAA champions including Ron Jeidy, Lee Kemp, Jack Reinwand, Pat Christenson and Jim Haines. In 1976, former Badgers wrestlers Jim Haines and Russ Hellickson competed for the USA in the Montreal Olympics where Hellickson won a silver medal. In 1980, Lee Kemp would compete for the USA in the Moscow Olympics, and Andy Rein would compete for the USA in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics winning the silver. As in seasons past, the Badgers are looking ahead to a strong showing in this year’s national championships. Grab your Wisconsin Badgers wrestling tickets at StubHub.
