Wizkid: Nigeria's R&B sensation to play one-off show in London this September
Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, better known as Wizkid, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter whose unique voice and catchy hooks have attracted the attention of international fans, particularly following his collaboration with Drake on the global hit, "One Dance", which reached number one in 15 countries.
Before that, he initially rose to prominence in 2010 with the release of the song "Holla at Your Boy" (nominated for Best Pop Single) from his debut studio album, Superstar (2011), while "Don't Dull", "Love My Baby", "Pakurumo", "Oluwa Lo Ni" and "Tease Me/Bad Guys" were also released as singles.
Wizkid's self-titled second studio album, Ayo (2014) produced six singles: "Jaiye Jaiye", "On Top Your Matter", "One Question", "Joy", "Bombay" and "Show You the Money", before collaborations with the likes of KCee, Jesse Jagz and R2Bees.
After illness forced the African star to cancel his latest US tour, Wizkid has confirmed that his next appearance will be at the Royal Albert Hall in London on 29 September. So don't miss your chance to catch his comeback show live – grab Wizkid tickets at StubHub today.
Wizkid: from church music roots to African superstardom
The youngest of six children, Wizkid started his musical career at the age of 11. His first album release, Lil Prinz (2001) had seven tracks, and was a collaborative effort with the Glorious Five: a group he and a couple of his church friends formed.
Prior to the release of his first studio album, Wizkid built up a great deal of momentum by taking the role of guest artist on several prominent tracks. He joined Kel for the single "Turn By Turn" and M.I. for "Fast Money, Fast Cars". His moment of glory arrived soon after, when his first big single "Holla At Your Boy" became one of Nigeria's biggest hits.
He now commands a huge following on social media, having become the very first Nigerian artist to achieve over one million followers on Twitter; while his success has earned him high rankings on Forbes' list of richest and most bankable artists in Africa.
Wizkid: Nigerian crowd-pleaser puts on a great show
Wizkid's concerts could almost be described as a variety show, because while they prominently feature the R&B artist's memorable voice, plenty of other talent is also thrown in the mix. Local comedians or hosts are often selected as emcees, keeping the crowd entertained before Wizkid takes the stage. Opening acts such as Afrobeats star Sona get audience members fired up, ensuring that, by the time Wizkid is ready perform, the crowd are already on a high. Grab Wizkid tickets at StubHub today.
