Yonder Mountain String Band’s background
Yonder Mountain String Band formed in 1998, when Dave Johnston's former group disbanded. Johnston quickly got together a group of bluegrass musicians who liked to play fast and loud, and the Yonder Mountain String Band was born. After forming, the band began playing shows around Colorado and attracted a dedicated local fan base with their distinctive fusion of bluegrass and prog rock.
Yonder Mountain String Band’s live recordings
Yonder Mountain String Band have always been a live act first and foremost. They cemented that reputation when they released Mountain Tracks, Vol. 1, an album compiled from their vast collection of live recordings. This would end up becoming the first in a long series, with four more Mountain Tracks volumes arriving between 2002 and 2008. The albums vary in length and in tracklists and have become something of a collectors’ series for completists, who recognize the quality of studio albums like 2015’s Black Sheep but still prefer the raw energy of the group’s live recordings.
