Youngstown State Penguins Football TicketsThe Youngstown State football team, known as the Penguins, has a long and rich tradition that intersects with the history of small and mid-sized college football in America. The team was originally part of the smaller College Division and later Division II football between 1938 and 1977. After joining Division I-AA (now known as FCS) in 1978, the team became a frequent playoff contender. Youngstown State entered its most dominant phase under future Ohio State coach Jim Tressel, during which it won four national championships. In 1994, the team cemented an undefeated 14-0-1 record with a 28-14 win against Boise State in the title game. Independent for most of its history, Youngstown State joined the Missouri Valley Conference, then known as the Gateway Football Conference, in 1997. The team returned to the championship game once again in January 2017 under head coach Bo Pelini, but it lost to James Madison by a score of 28-14.
