Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas was born and raised in Glen Cove, Long Island, New York. Ashanti's natural gift
for dancing was fostered by her mother - a former dance instructor. Ashanti took up ballet, tap and jazz dancing at an early
age. Eventually, Ashanti's talent for singing also came to light in an unusual way. Ashanti liked to put on her headphones
while she did her household chores, singing along with the music. And, it was her mom who asked her to turn off the music.
Her mom thought she was hearing the radio when in reality it was Ashanti's remarkable singing voice. Once the epiphany set
in, her mother focused on Ashanti's singing abilities and signed her up for talent shows. Music became Ashanti's first choice
for a career path, even though things didn't fall into place for her right away. Jive Records initially signed Ashanti on
but she wanted to pen her own material so never put out an album with the recording label. She then relocated to Atlanta when
she was 17 with the hopes of inking a deal with Epic. That didn't happen, but she did get her break when her path crossed
with Irv Gotti of Murder Inc. She lent her voice to "How We Roll," a track done by the late Big Pun. The single climbed to
the top of the charts in 2001. Shortly after, she inked a deal with Murder Inc. and set to work on her first album. Prior
to her first album's release, Ashanti built her reputation by making contributions to other works of Murder Inc.'s artists,
including Ja Rule and Fat Joe. Her own song, "Foolish," arrived around the same time as those singles. In 2002, Ashanti's
eponymous album made its enormous dent on the music scene. In its first week of release, the album sold over 500,000 copies.
Because of the album's success, she took home a Grammy, eight Billboard Awards, the Soul Train Aretha Franklin Award and two
American Music Awards. Her sophomore album, Chapter II, dropped in 2003 and scored the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 chart.
The two albums that followed also cracked the Billboard 200 chart as well. In addition to her singing career, Ashanti has
also taken up acting. Leading up to her success as a singer, Ashanti earned small parts in films like Malcolm X (1992). Bigger
roles came her way once her music career took off, including roles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (2003) and John Tucker Must
Die (2006), among others. More recently, she scored a more consistent part, playing Latasha on the TV drama, Army Wives (2013),
and she just released her fifth studio effort, BraveHeart in 2014.
R&B, pop singer
Ashanti has cut five studio albums, and nearly two dozen singles and music videos. Her eponymous debut album yielded the No.
1 smash, "Foolish," which settled at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for 10 weeks. Ashanti's other studio albums include:
Chapter II (2003); Concrete Rose (2004); The Declaration (2008); andBraveHeart(2014).
you know that Ashanti besides being a dancer, singer, poet, actress and songwriter, Ashanti is also recognized for being a
philanthropist? Yes, it's true. With her extremely busy schedule, Ashanti still manages to squeeze in charity work. She is
