Indians Update – Week of July 4

Here come the Indians. Though the Tigers have been at the top of the division just about since the beginning of the season, it's been the Indians and the Royals who have shown that the A.L. Central is not going to be a cakewalk. Thanks to a June that saw quite a few series wins against prominent teams, the Indians are right back in the heart of the playoff race in the American League, which should make for a very interesting second half of the season as the Indians hope to build a little bit of momentum.

More than anything, the Indians and their fans are very excited about the further development of Michael Brantley, who is having a career season in the heart of the Indians' order and looking like a guy on his way to being a bona fide superstar. At the midway point, Brantley is leading the team in just about every major offensive category, including batting average (well above.300) and both homers and RBIs. Brantley even leads the team in stolen bases, making him as much of a threat on the base paths as he is in the batter's box.

With Brantley playing very well in the first half of the season, the Indians have been able to put up runs in bunches, making them one of the top run-scoring teams in the American League. It's not all about the batters, however, as the Indians have also gotten a spark from pitchers like Corey Kluber, who leads the team in ERA and wins and has been consistently giving the Indians a chance every time he heads out to take the bump. Kluber has also been fanning batters left and right this season, putting him right up there with Felix Hernandez, David Price, Yu Darvish and Max Scherzer for the league lead in K's. Thanks to a talented squad that can win in a variety of ways, the Indians are looking forward to greener pastures as they look to head into the second half of the season on a high note.

2014 Cleveland Indians Schedule

One look at the roster and you'll see why fans are excited about this team, as they have a talented squad filled with savvy vets and rising stars that gives them a big-time chance in the A.L.Central. The Indians are coming off a 2013 season that saw this team make the postseason, and now the Tribe is looking to make a run at the World Series after reloading with another strong squad that can do a little bit of everything. This club surprised a lot of people last season with their success, but they won't be able to surprise anyone in 2014, fans or opposing teams. The Indians have a ton of great matchups at Progressive Field, of course, but they also have a schedule filled with possibilities for those willing to hit the road and see their team in foreign territory, as watching your favorite team on the road can give you a completely different experience for your favorite team.

The Indians will host their division rivals frequently throughout the season, and the biggest matchups will likely come when the Detroit Tigers hit the diamond at Progressive Field. The Tigers edged out the Indians for the American League Central division title last season by a single game, and the Tribe knows that beating the Tigers consistently will go a long way in their quest for the division crown. These games are sure to be about as intense as regular season contests get, and fans will be flocking to the stadium every time the Tigers come to town.

The Indians will also have to be way of the Kansas City Royals in 2014. The Royals are coming out of a rebuilding phase of their franchise and now have a roster stacked with some of the best young talent in baseball. The Royals finished third in the A.L. Central in 2013, but could be in for a major improvement this season. The Tribe will have to knock K.C. back down to earth this season, and they're all the more likely to do so with a raucous crowd behind them. With a schedule packed with games all over, the Indians will be brushing up against some of the most talented players and teams in the league all year long, giving you plenty of reasons to head out and make sure that you don't miss a second of the action as the Indians take aim at the top of the standings.

Cleveland Indians Team Info

The Cleveland Indians play in the American League Central division of Major League Baseball, a division that also features the Chicago White Sox, Minnesota Twins, Kansas City Royals and Detroit Tigers. The Indians finished in second place in the AL Central in 2013, trailing the division champion Tigers by just one game. That's the amazing thing about the MLB season, as a single game of the long 162-game schedule can be all that matters when it comes down to the end of the year. The Tribe is looking to leapfrog Detroit this year and finish atop the division standings, giving fans plenty of thrills along the way as they hope to swing their way into the postseason. Thanks to guys like Nick Swisher, Justin Masterson, Jason Kipnis and more, the Indians have some major talent and won't be going quietly in the A.L. Central no matter how steep the competition.

The MLB Experience

Sports have been a part of cultures around the world for a very long time, and spectators have always enjoyed watching athletes compete at the highest of levels. That has not changed in the modern age, and baseball is one of the most popular sports in the United States of America. Known as The National Pastime, Major League Baseball holds a special place in the hearts of sports fans around the country. That's why so many people take the time to head to the ballpark often, and it doesn't hurt that MLB has the best players in the entire world hitting the field every day of the season. The Cleveland Indians are sure to play in some great games at home this season, and you can experience the allure of baseball when you hit the stands to see them play in a game sure to be loaded with memorable moments you'll be talking about a long time after the final pitch.

Cleveland Indians History

The Cleveland Indians franchise originated in 1894 as the Grand Rapids Rustlers. In 1900, the team moved to Cleveland and was renamed the Cleveland Lake Shores. Over the next 15 years, the organization would undergo several names changes, eventually settling on the Indians in 1915. The Cleveland Indians have two World Series championships to their credit, one coming in 1920 and the other in 1948. They have won the American League pennant five times, most recently in 1997. In their history, the Indians have also had an embarrassment of riches in terms of legendary players, including Bob Feller, Shoeless Joe Jackson, Manny Ramirez, Jim Thome, Nap Lajoie and more. In an exciting new era, fans are eager to see if this group of talented players can join the Cleveland icons who came before them and get their team back to the Fall Classic.

Cleveland Indians Trivia

Which player holds the Indians franchise record for the highest batting average in a single season?

The answer is "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, who hit a whopping.411 in 1911. Though Shoeless Joe often is mentioned as being a part of the famous Chicago White Sox teams, he also played some unbelievable baseball for the Indians as well, cementing him as one of the greatest players in the history of Major League Baseball.

The Fans

Fans of Major League Baseball are known for their loyalty and dedication to the teams that they love the most. When it comes to the Cleveland Indians, the team's fan base is about as rabid as it gets, always showing up in a big way to cheer on their favorite players. The Indians have had some great games over the years, and fans have some amazing memories as a result, and these die-hards are always ready for more great Tribe moments. Whether you're looking for a big game at home or an exciting matchup on the road, the Indians have plenty of options this year as they round into form and again look to be a major factor in the American League postseason picture.
