The Cleveland Guardians bring one of baseball's oldest stories to life every summer at Progressive Field. The ballpark opened as Jacobs Field in 1994 and sits beside the Hope Memorial Bridge, where the eight Guardians of Traffic statues gave the club its current name beginning with the 2022 season. Guardians tickets put you among a crowd that knows its franchise history cold, the byproduct of a team playing in front of the same city for more than a century.
The franchise was founded in 1896 in Columbus, Ohio, and arrived in Cleveland in 1900, just in time to be one of the American League's eight charter franchises when the league declared major league status in 1901. Cleveland is one of only four charter cities still hosting its original team, alongside Boston, Chicago, and Detroit. The club answered to a string of early names, from the Blues to the Naps, the latter honoring Hall of Fame second baseman Nap Lajoie, before playing as the Cleveland Indians from 1915 through 2021 and becoming the Guardians in 2022. The franchise has won two World Series, in 1920 and 1948, claimed six American League pennants, and collected 13 division titles since the AL Central formed in 1994. The 1954 team won 111 games and posted a .721 winning percentage that still stands as an American League record. After long lean years, the 1990s delivered a roaring revival behind a young lineup featuring Kenny Lofton, Albert Belle, Manny Ramírez, and Jim Thome, with pennants in 1995 and 1997 and a packed ballpark every night. The 2016 club added another pennant and pushed the Chicago Cubs to a seven-game World Series, and the 2017 team won 22 consecutive games, the longest streak in American League history and the second-longest in Major League Baseball history.
Cleveland's bond with its baseball team runs generations deep. The club sold out 455 consecutive games between 1995 and 2001, a Major League Baseball record until the Boston Red Sox passed it in 2008, and it honored those fans by retiring the number 455 in 2001. Slider, the mascot since 1990, keeps the ballpark loose, while longtime radio voice and Ford C. Frick Award winner Tom Hamilton has called the summers for a generation of listeners. Statues of Bob Feller, Jim Thome, Larry Doby, Frank Robinson, and Lou Boudreau stand around Progressive Field, and the franchise carries a winning all-time record across more than 120 seasons. The 1989 film Major League, a comedy about a hapless Cleveland club going from worst to first, still gets quoted by anyone who grew up here. For plenty of families in town, Guardians tickets are less a transaction than a tradition passed down each spring.
