Temple Owls Basketball History
The Temple Owls basketball program is one of the most storied programs in all
of college basketball. They were the first ever NIT Champions back in 1938 and went on to become the sixth team in NCAA history
to reach the milestone of 1,800 wins placing them in a league among such perennial powerhouses as Kansas, Duke, Syracuse,
North Carolina, and Kentucky. Sure legendary coach John Cheney is no longer prowling the sidelines guiding the Owls, but the
school's tradition remains as strong as ever. This season could well be a return to glory for Temple with a talented returning
core that will mesh well with some big time recruits. Head coach Fran Dunphy is now in his eighth year at the helm of the
Owls basketball team and has proven that he has a way to motivate his team and will have no problem getting the best out of
a returning group of players who are yearning to prove that they are one of the dominant teams in their new conference. This
is an exciting time to be a Temple Owls fan as they look to find their way to the top of their new conference and every die
hard Owls fan will want to be in Liacouras Center to cheer them on to big wins.
Temple Owls Basketball Conference
Temple Owls play in the newly formed American Athletic Conference which is also now the home of a few former Big East schools
including the University of Connecticut and South Florida. The Big East has been in a tumultuous state for many years, with
clashes between programs that had football programs and those that did not. The newly formed American Athletic Conference
boasts schools from Texas to Florida and all the way to Connecticut. The dynamic conference has proven to be one of the best
in men's college basketball since forming last year, with teams like Cincinnati and UCONN as perennial contenders. Cincinnati
is the defending American Athletic Conference regular season champion, but the UCONN Huskies won the National Championship
in 2014, bringing a National Championship to the conference during its first year of existence. Although it is only one year
old there have already been changes in the American Athletic Conference, with the departure of Louisville and Rutgers and
the addition of Tulsa and Tulane. With the American Athletic Conference shakeup, things may look a little different on the
college basketball landscape, but no matter which conference they are in, the Temple Owls are a team with a storied legacy
that continues to find success. Expect big things to happen in the American Athletic Conference in the years to come as new
rivalries are established and it continues to prove itself as one of the premiere college hoops conferences in the country.
