5 Seconds of Summer, commonly known as 5SOS, is an Australian pop rock band formed in Sydney in 2011. Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, and Calum Hood started posting cover videos on YouTube while attending the same high school, and drummer Ashton Irwin joined the lineup in December of that year. The group played their first gig at Sydney's Annandale Hotel to a crowd of roughly 12 people. Within two years, they were touring arenas worldwide as the opening act for One Direction on the Take Me Home Tour, building a massive international following before they had even released a debut album.
5 Seconds of Summer's self-titled debut album arrived in 2014 and peaked at number one in 11 countries, led by the single "She Looks So Perfect," which topped charts in four countries. Sounds Good Feels Good followed in 2015, reaching number one in eight countries and making 5SOS the first band (not a vocal group) to have their first two full-length albums debut atop the Billboard 200. Their third album, Youngblood (2018), continued the streak and made them the first Australian act to land three number one albums on the Billboard 200. The title track became the top-selling single in Australia in 2018, the fourth highest-selling Australian single of the 2010s decade, and the eleventh best-selling single in Australian chart history. Calm (2020) earned a fourth consecutive number one in Australia, making the group the second Australian band in history to achieve that milestone. Their fifth album, 5SOS5 (2022), was released independently through BMG, and their sixth, Everyone's a Star!, arrived in 2025 on Republic Records.
Rooted in pop punk and power pop on their early records, 5 Seconds of Summer have steadily expanded their sound across pop rock, new wave, and synth-driven territory. Rolling Stone called them "emo-gone-pop" in 2015, and their influences span from Green Day and All Time Low to Depeche Mode and Tears for Fears. With over 10 million albums sold, more than 2 million concert tickets sold worldwide, and over 7 billion streams across platforms, 5SOS rank among the most commercially successful Australian musical acts of all time.
