Few settings in college football match a big game at Beaver Stadium in Happy Valley. The home of Penn State Nittany Lions football seats 106,304 in University Park, Pennsylvania, one of the largest capacities in the sport, and the program filling it dates to 1887. Penn State owns two consensus national championships, four Big Ten titles, 13 undefeated seasons and the seventh-most all-time wins of any Division I program, a resume few schools can match.
The modern program was built on coaching longevity. Rip Engle went 16 seasons without a losing year from 1950 to 1965, and his successor, Joe Paterno, spent 46 seasons as head coach, the longest tenure of any head coach in FBS history. Paterno's 409 wins stand as the most in FBS football, and his teams won national championships in 1982 and 1986 while appearing in 37 bowl games. Beaver Stadium was expanded six times during his tenure.
After a century as an independent, Penn State joined the Big Ten in 1993 and kept collecting hardware, winning conference championships in 1994, 2005, 2008 and 2016. In the first 12-team College Football Playoff, the sixth-seeded Nittany Lions won a first-round game against the SMU Mustangs and beat the Boise State Broncos in the Fiesta Bowl before falling to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in an Orange Bowl semifinal. In December 2025, Penn State hired Matt Campbell away from the Iowa State Cyclones to open the program's next chapter.
