Black Coffee, born Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo in Umlazi, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, is one of the most influential figures in Afro house and deep house music. Rooted in a foundation of jazz studies at Durban University of Technology, he cut his teeth as a backup singer for South African jazz legend Hugh Masekela before forming the Afro-pop trio SHANA with schoolmates Shota and Demor. His trajectory shifted in 2003 when he was selected for the Red Bull Music Academy, a turning point that launched him into the South African dance music scene and set the stage for a global career.
His self-titled debut album arrived in 2005, released on his own Soulistic Music label. Built with little more than basic software and a computer mouse, the record blended house music with R&B and jazz influences, sampling tracks from Thandiswa Mazwai, Hugh Masekela, and Busi Mhlongo. The album earned Black Coffee a South African Music Award for Best Dance Album and established him as a rising force in electronic music. Over the next decade, he released a string of acclaimed projects, from Have Another One (2007) and Home Brewed (2009) to the double-platinum Africa Rising (2012) and Pieces of Me (2015), which went platinum within a month of release. His signature sound, a blend of tribal rhythms, melodic layers, and vocal textures rooted in African musical traditions, carved out a lane that transcended regional boundaries.
Black Coffee's reach expanded significantly through high-profile collaborations and international performances. He contributed to Drake's More Life album in 2017, teamed up with David Guetta on the single "Drive" in 2018, and released "LaLaLa" with Usher in 2019. He co-wrote and co-produced three tracks on Drake's Honestly, Nevermind in 2022 and collaborated with &ME and Keinemusik on "Rapture Pt. III" in 2023. On stage, Black Coffee has performed at Coachella, Ultra Music Festival, Boiler Room, Cercle, and Circoloco, building a reputation for immersive, layered sets that pull from the full spectrum of African electronic music. In October 2023, he sold out Madison Square Garden, becoming the first South African artist to do so.
