Bob Dylan was born Robert Allen Zimmerman on May 24, 1941, in Duluth, Minnesota, and grew up in Hibbing, where his high school bands played covers of Little Richard and Elvis Presley. Folk music changed the trajectory. At the University of Minnesota he found the coffeehouse circuit of Minneapolis's Dinkytown neighborhood, started performing as Bob Dylan, and immersed himself in the songwriters who shaped him: his hero Woody Guthrie, bluesman Robert Johnson, and country great Hank Williams.
In January 1961 he moved to New York City to play the clubs of Greenwich Village, and within months an enthusiastic New York Times review and a Columbia Records contract set his career in motion. His second album, The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan (1963), established him as a singular songwriting voice, and "Blowin' in the Wind" and "The Times They Are a-Changin'" became anthems of the civil rights and antiwar movements. In 1965 he plugged in. The run that followed, Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, and Blonde on Blonde, rewired popular music, with the six-minute single "Like a Rolling Stone" reaching No. 2 in the US and later topping Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
The decades since have proven his restlessness. He recorded more than 100 songs with the Band in Woodstock in 1967, explored country on Nashville Skyline (1969), won acclaim all over again with Blood on the Tracks (1975) and the Grammy-winning Time Out of Mind (1997), and co-founded the Traveling Wilburys with George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, and Jeff Lynne. In 2020 he released Rough and Rowdy Ways, his 39th studio album, and it reached No. 1 on the UK album chart, making him the oldest artist to score a No. 1 with new original material.
Then there is the touring. Since 1988 Dylan has played roughly 100 shows a year on what has become known as the Never Ending Tour, passing 3,000 performances in 2019 with longtime bassist Tony Garnier anchoring the band. He continually reshapes his arrangements and vocal delivery, so no two shows are the same, and that unpredictability is a big part of the appeal of Bob Dylan tickets for fans who catch him every time he rolls through town.
