About Boyz II Men

Boyz II Men are an American vocal harmony group from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, formed in 1985 by students at the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts. They started under the name Unique Attraction and later took the Boyz II Men name from "Boys to Men," a song by New Edition, the group that inspired them from the beginning. Today they perform as a trio: baritone Nathan Morris, tenor Wanyá Morris, and tenor Shawn Stockman. Their signature sound layers classic soul harmonies over new jack swing and hip-hop beats, a blend the group and their early mentor Michael Bivins dubbed "hip-hop doo-wop."

The breakthrough came after the group sang an a cappella version of New Edition's "Can You Stand the Rain" for Bivins backstage at a 1989 Philadelphia radio concert, a performance that landed them a deal with Motown Records. The 1991 debut album, Cooleyhighharmony, sold more than nine million copies behind the top-five singles "Motownphilly" and "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday." What followed was one of the great chart runs of the decade. "End of the Road" (1992) spent a then-record thirteen weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. "I'll Make Love to You" (1994) broke that record with fourteen weeks, and when "On Bended Knee" took over the top spot, Boyz II Men became only the second act after The Beatles to replace themselves at number one. Their duet with Mariah Carey, "One Sweet Day" (1995), set a new standard for weeks at the top. The 1994 album II sold more than twelve million copies in the United States alone, and the group won four Grammy Awards across the 1990s.

Boyz II Men have performed in concerts around the world throughout the 2010s and 2020s, including a multi-year Las Vegas residency at the Mirage Hotel and Casino from 2013 through 2018 and return residencies at The Chelsea at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas beginning in 2024. Philadelphia paid permanent tribute in 2017, renaming the section of Broad Street that passes their old high school "Boyz II Men Boulevard," and the group received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2012. Their influence is widely credited with helping carry R&B back to the top of the pop charts, a legacy examined in the 2021 Netflix series This Is Pop. For fans holding Boyz II Men tickets, the draw is timeless: stacked vocal harmonies, a cappella moments, and ballads that have soundtracked weddings and slow dances for more than three decades.

Who are the members of Boyz II Men?

Boyz II Men perform as a trio of Nathan Morris, Wanyá Morris, and Shawn Stockman. Nathan Morris, a founding member since 1985, provides the husky baritone and took over the bass parts after the group slimmed to three voices. Wanyá Morris, who joined in 1987, sings the melismatic tenor leads on many of the group's biggest ballads. Shawn Stockman, who joined in 1988, is known for his clear falsetto. The classic quartet lineup featured bass singer Michael McCary, whose deep tones anchored the group's spoken-word passages until he left in 2003. Founding member Marc Nelson departed before the debut album was recorded. From the start, a Boyz II Men trademark has been the multi-lead arrangement, with every member trading lead vocals within a song instead of one frontman carrying the show.

What are Boyz II Men's most popular songs?

Boyz II Men's catalog is anchored by a run of 1990s hits that set chart records and remain staples of their live shows. Their most widely recognized songs include:
  • "End of the Road" (1992)
  • "I'll Make Love to You" (1994)
  • "On Bended Knee" (1994)
  • "One Sweet Day" with Mariah Carey (1995)
  • "Motownphilly" (1991)
  • "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday" (1991)
  • "Water Runs Dry"
  • "Four Seasons of Loneliness" (1997)
  • "A Song for Mama" (1997)
"End of the Road," "I'll Make Love to You," and "One Sweet Day" each held the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 longer than any single before them, a streak that helped define 1990s R&B.

What awards have Boyz II Men won?

Boyz II Men won four Grammy Awards in the 1990s, and the honors stretch well beyond that. Major accolades include:
  • Four Grammy Awards: Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for Cooleyhighharmony (1992), for "End of the Road" (1993), and for "I'll Make Love to You" (1995), plus Best R&B Album for II (1995)
  • American Music Awards: multiple wins across the 1990s, including repeated Favorite Soul/R&B Band/Duo/Group honors and song awards for "End of the Road" and "I'll Make Love to You"
  • Billboard Music Awards: Top Hot 100 Artist and Top Hot 100 Song for "End of the Road" in 1992
  • Hollywood Walk of Fame: a star awarded in January 2012, the same year a Billboard retrospective named Boyz II Men the biggest boy band

What is the Boyz II Men fan culture like?

Boyz II Men draw one of the most loyal, multi-generational audiences in R&B, with especially deep roots in their hometown of Philadelphia and a thriving following in Japan, where the group has released exclusive material. Philadelphia crowned the connection in 2017 when the city renamed the stretch of Broad Street from Christian to Carpenter Streets "Boyz II Men Boulevard," right by the performing arts high school where the group formed. Las Vegas became a second home during the Mirage residency years, and the group has hosted dedicated fan events like the 2011 "Love Cruise," a 20th-anniversary sail from Miami to Nassau that featured concerts, photo sessions, a prom night, and onboard vow renewals. The 2021 Netflix series This Is Pop devoted its first episode to the group's impact on the boy band era, and Boyz II Men have been listed among the greatest doo-wop vocal groups of all time. At a Boyz II Men show, the crowd spans every age, singing along to ballads that have crossed generations.
