About Brooks & Dunn

Brooks & Dunn are an American country music duo built on two personalities that could not be more different: Kix Brooks, the high-energy showman out of Shreveport, Louisiana, and Ronnie Dunn, the soulful, quietly intense vocalist from Coleman, Texas. Songwriter and record producer Tim DuBois paired them in 1988, betting that two solo artists who had each charted singles through the 1980s would click together. The bet paid off. Their sound splits the difference between rambunctious, rocked-up honky-tonk with punchy, danceable beats and smooth, pop-tinged ballads, with Dunn's baritone carrying most of the signature hits and Brooks supplying the stage fire.

The debut album, Brand New Man, landed in 1991 and made history straight out of the gate. Its first four singles, Brand New Man, My Next Broken Heart, Neon Moon, and Boot Scootin' Boogie, all reached number one, the first duo or group in country music history to open a career that way. The album went on to ship six million copies in the United States. Across the catalog, Brooks & Dunn have released 50 singles, sent 20 to number one on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart, and pushed 19 more into the top 10. My Maria finished as the top country song of 1996 and Ain't Nothing 'bout You did the same in 2001 with a six-week run at number one, the duo's longest. Boot Scootin' Boogie helped repopularize line dancing across the United States. In 1996, the duo won Entertainer of the Year from both the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music, and the CMA named them Vocal Duo of the Year every year from 1992 to 2006 except 2000.

The first run ended in 2010. After announcing retirement in 2009, Brooks & Dunn wrapped The Last Rodeo tour with a final concert on September 2, 2010, at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, with proceeds benefiting the Country Music Hall of Fame. Both members kept recording, Dunn with a self-titled 2011 solo album and Brooks with New to This Town in 2012, before reuniting in 2015 for a run of Las Vegas shows with Reba McEntire that became a recurring engagement. Induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame followed in 2019, the same year the duo released Reboot, a set of their hits re-recorded with contemporary country artists such as Luke Combs and Kane Brown. Reboot II arrived in 2024 with collaborators spanning Jelly Roll, Lainey Wilson, and Halestorm. As Dunn put it when the duo first wrapped up, "We've ended up more like brothers." Brooks & Dunn tickets now draw multiple generations of country fans at once, from the line-dance faithful of the 1990s to the newer listeners the Reboot projects brought in.

Who are the members of Brooks & Dunn?

Brooks & Dunn is a two-member duo of vocalist-songwriters, Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn, both of whom recorded as solo artists before teaming up. Kix Brooks, born in Shreveport, Louisiana, in 1955, spent the 1980s as a Nashville songwriter, co-writing number-one singles for John Conlee, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and Highway 101, and released a solo album on Capitol Records in 1989; he later became host of the radio countdown show American Country Countdown in 2006. Ronnie Dunn, born in Coleman, Texas, in 1953, played bass in local bands and studied theology with the goal of becoming a Baptist preacher before music won out. His win in a 1989 talent contest, whose grand prize was a Nashville recording session, set the duo's formation in motion. Dunn sings lead on most of the duo's biggest hits, while Brooks, the showman of the pair, takes lead on songs such as Rock My World (Little Country Girl) and You're Gonna Miss Me When I'm Gone.

What are Brooks & Dunn's most popular songs?

The most popular Brooks & Dunn songs are anchored by 20 number-one country singles, starting with the four consecutive chart-toppers that launched the career. The essentials:
  • Brand New Man, My Next Broken Heart, Neon Moon, and Boot Scootin' Boogie: the 1991 and 1992 debut-album singles that all hit number one.
  • My Maria: a three-week number one in 1996 and that year's top country song on Billboard's Year-End chart.
  • Ain't Nothing 'bout You: six weeks at number one in 2001, the duo's longest stay on top and the year's top country song.
  • Hard Workin' Man: the 1993 hit that earned the duo their first Grammy Award.
  • Believe: the 2005 ballad that won the CMA's Single of the Year and Song of the Year.
  • Red Dirt Road and Play Something Country: the duo's 18th and 20th number ones, closing out the chart run.
Deeper staples include Only in America, Husbands and Wives, Little Miss Honky Tonk, and Building Bridges, a top-five hit with guest vocals from Vince Gill and Sheryl Crow.

What awards have Brooks & Dunn won?

Brooks & Dunn have won more Country Music Association Awards than any act in history, on top of two Grammy Awards and induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
  • Country Music Association Awards: the most of any act ever, including 16 Vocal Duo of the Year wins and the 1996 Entertainer of the Year honor, the first time a duo took it.
  • Academy of Country Music Awards: 30 wins, second-most in the academy's history behind only Miranda Lambert.
  • Grammy Awards: two wins for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, for Hard Workin' Man in 1994 and My Maria in 1996.
  • Country Music Hall of Fame: inducted in 2019.
The Academy of Country Music also presented the duo its Milestone Award during the 2010 tribute special The Last Rodeo.

What is Brooks & Dunn's fan culture like?

Brooks & Dunn's fan culture is genuinely multigenerational, spanning the line-dance era of the 1990s and the newer country audience the Reboot albums pulled in. The core crowd came up in the 1990s, when Boot Scootin' Boogie helped put line dancing back on dance floors across the United States. A second wave arrived through collaborations with Luke Combs, Kane Brown, Jelly Roll, and Lainey Wilson, which pointed younger listeners back toward the original catalog. The reunited duo also made Las Vegas a recurring home alongside Reba McEntire, and their 2010 farewell was marked by The Last Rodeo, a televised Academy of Country Music tribute in which a lineup of country stars performed the duo's songs. The crowd for Brooks & Dunn tickets mixes longtime honky-tonk loyalists with newer fans who arrived through those collaborations.
