About Tennessee Volunteers Football

The Tennessee Volunteers football program is one of the most accomplished in college football history. Founded in 1891 at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, the Vols compete in the Southeastern Conference and claim six national championships, including wire-service titles in 1951 and 1998. The program's all-time record ranks among the top 15 in NCAA history, with more than 880 wins, 16 conference titles, and 41 consensus All-Americans over more than 130 seasons of play.

Tennessee Volunteers football tickets put you inside Neyland Stadium, one of the most imposing venues in all of college sports. With a capacity of 101,915, Neyland is the sixth-largest stadium in the country and holds the record for the most home wins at a single venue in college football history. The stadium sits along the Tennessee River in Knoxville, and its sheer scale creates an atmosphere that few venues can match. Gameday traditions are deeply embedded in the experience, from the Vol Walk down Peyton Manning Pass to the team running through the Power T formed by the Pride of the Southland Marching Band.

The program's identity was forged under General Robert Neyland, whose 173 wins across three coaching stints transformed Tennessee into a national power. Neyland's 1939 team remains the only squad in college football history to go an entire regular season without allowing a single point, and his teams set the NCAA record for consecutive shutout wins at 17. Five Tennessee head coaches have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame: Neyland, Bowden Wyatt, Doug Dickey, Johnny Majors, and Phillip Fulmer. Fulmer's 1998 squad, led by quarterback Tee Martin, linebacker Al Wilson, and wide receiver Peerless Price, finished 13-0 and defeated Florida State 23-16 in the inaugural BCS National Championship Game.

How many national championships have the Tennessee Volunteers won?

The Tennessee Volunteers claim six national championships in football: 1938, 1940, 1950, 1951, 1967, and 1998. Two of those titles, 1951 and 1998, were recognized by the major wire-service selectors (AP Poll and Coaches' Poll). The 1951 team, featuring Heisman Trophy runner-up Hank Lauricella and future Pro Football Hall of Famer Doug Atkins, captured the AP national championship after a 10-0 regular season. The 1998 team completed a perfect 13-0 campaign and won the first-ever BCS National Championship Game. Tennessee has also earned 16 conference championships, including 13 SEC titles.

Who are the biggest rivals of the Tennessee Volunteers?

The Tennessee Volunteers' most storied rivalry is with the Alabama Crimson Tide, a matchup known as the Third Saturday in October. This annual SEC showdown dates back over a century and consistently draws national attention. Tennessee's longest and most-played rivalry is with the Kentucky Wildcats, a series rooted in geography and conference history. The Vanderbilt Commodores serve as the Vols' in-state rival, with the two programs meeting annually as fellow SEC members. The Florida Gators and Georgia Bulldogs have also been significant rivals, particularly since the formation of the SEC East division in 1992.

What notable players have come from the Tennessee Volunteers football program?

Tennessee has produced 27 College Football Hall of Famers, ranking 10th among all programs. Several of those players also reached the Pro Football Hall of Fame, including Peyton Manning (College HOF 2017, Pro HOF 2021), Reggie White (College HOF 2002, Pro HOF 2006), and Doug Atkins (College HOF 1985, Pro HOF 1975). Other Hall of Fame inductees include Johnny Majors, Al Wilson, and Eric Berry. The program has retired eight jersey numbers, with Peyton Manning's No. 16 among the most recognized. Tennessee has also produced 41 consensus All-Americans across the history of the program.

What are the gameday traditions for Tennessee Volunteers football?

Tennessee Volunteers football is defined by some of the most distinctive traditions in college sports.
  • Rocky Top: The unofficial fight song, originally a bluegrass tune by the Osborne Brothers, became a Tennessee state song in 1982. The Pride of the Southland Marching Band plays it throughout every game, and it is widely recognized as one of the most memorable (and most disliked by opponents) songs in college football.
  • Running through the T: Before every home game, the Pride of the Southland Band forms a giant Power T on the field, and the entire team storms through it to the roar of over 100,000 fans. Doug Dickey introduced this tradition in 1965.
  • The Vol Walk: Players walk from the Neyland-Thompson Sports Complex down Peyton Manning Pass and into the stadium, lined by thousands of fans. Johnny Majors started the tradition after a 1988 game at Auburn, and it became an official part of gameday in 1990.
  • Vol Navy: More than 200 boats dock along the Tennessee River outside Neyland Stadium before each game. The tradition started with broadcaster George Mooney, who tied his boat to a tree near the stadium in 1962 to avoid traffic.
  • Smokey: Tennessee's live mascot is a Bluetick Coonhound, selected after a student poll in 1953. The current mascot is Smokey XI.
  • Checkerboard end zones: The iconic orange and white checkerboard pattern in the end zones, inspired by the clock tower at historic Ayres Hall, first appeared in 1964.
