About Iron Maiden

Iron Maiden are an English heavy metal band formed in Leyton, East London, in 1975 by bassist and primary songwriter Steve Harris. As pioneers of the new wave of British heavy metal, they built a signature sound on Harris's galloping bass lines, harmonized twin-guitar leads, and the operatic vocals of Bruce Dickinson, with lyrics drawn from history, literature, mythology, war, and science fiction. For most of the band's history, the lineup has paired Harris and Dickinson with drummer Nicko McBrain and a three-guitar attack of Dave Murray, Adrian Smith, and Janick Gers.

The career arc reads like a blueprint for metal dominance. A self-titled 1980 debut reached number 4 on the UK Albums Chart, 1981's Killers marked their Billboard 200 debut, and the arrival of Dickinson in 1981 set up the breakthrough: The Number of the Beast (1982) became the band's first UK number 1 album and has sold almost 20 million copies, placing it among the most popular heavy metal albums of all time. Piece of Mind and Powerslave followed, with the World Slavery Tour playing 193 shows in 28 countries for an estimated 3.5 million people. When Dickinson and guitarist Adrian Smith returned in 1999, the band rolled into a second act of acclaim, with The Final Frontier (2010), The Book of Souls (2015), and Senjutsu (2021) each reaching number 1 in more than 25 countries. Iron Maiden have sold over 130 million albums worldwide, earned more than 600 certifications, and influenced generations of metal acts, from Metallica to Avenged Sevenfold.

An Iron Maiden concert is a full-scale production, with staging that helped write the blueprint for how heavy metal bands look, sound, and tour. Eddie, the band's macabre mascot, looms over the stage between galloping riffs. The crowd numbers speak for themselves: co-headlining Rock in Rio with Queen in 1985 before an estimated 350,000 to 500,000 people, and headlining Monsters of Rock at Donington Park in 1988 before 107,000 fans, the largest crowd in the festival's history. The band had played some 2,500 live shows as of October 2019, and their concerts have generated more than $1 billion in revenue since 1982, according to Pollstar. They have even toured on their own plane, Ed Force One, piloted by Dickinson, a licensed commercial airline pilot. More than 50 years after Harris formed the band, Iron Maiden tickets remain a gateway to one of heavy metal's defining live acts.

Who are the members of Iron Maiden?

Iron Maiden's lineup for most of their history is a six-piece, anchored by the only two members who have played on every release, Steve Harris and Dave Murray.
  • Steve Harris: bass and backing vocals. He founded the band in 1975 and remains its primary songwriter.
  • Bruce Dickinson: lead vocals. He joined in 1981 and is regularly ranked among the greatest heavy metal singers.
  • Dave Murray: guitars. He first joined in the 1970s and has appeared on every Iron Maiden release alongside Harris.
  • Adrian Smith: guitars and backing vocals. He joined in 1980, departed in 1990, and returned as part of the 1999 reunion.
  • Janick Gers: guitars. He joined in 1990 and stayed on after the reunion, completing the three-guitar lineup fans nicknamed The Three Amigos.
  • Nicko McBrain: drums. He has been the band's drummer since 1982.

What are Iron Maiden's most popular songs?

Iron Maiden's best-known songs come from the 1980s run that defined the band, led by Run to the Hills, The Number of the Beast, and The Trooper.
  • Run to the Hills: the 1982 single that put the band's trademark gallop riff on full display.
  • The Number of the Beast: the title track of their breakthrough album, re-released in 2005 to number 3 on the UK chart.
  • The Trooper: a Piece of Mind favorite built on the band's charging rhythm.
  • 2 Minutes to Midnight and Aces High: the twin singles from 1984's Powerslave.
  • Wasted Years: the standout single from 1986's Somewhere in Time.
  • Fear of the Dark: a 1992 track that earned a Grammy nomination and became a fixture of live setlists.
  • Bring Your Daughter... to the Slaughter: the 1990 single that became the band's first UK Singles Chart number 1.
  • Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Empire of the Clouds: the epics, an adaptation of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poem and an 18-minute piece that stands as the band's longest song.
Earlier favorites like Running Free, Phantom of the Opera, and Wrathchild have long been concert staples, and the catalog runs 47 singles deep.

What awards has Iron Maiden won?

Iron Maiden's major honors include a Grammy Award, a Brit Award, and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2026.
  • Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance, won in 2011 for the song El Dorado.
  • Brit Award for Best British Live Act, won in 2009.
  • Ivor Novello Award for International Achievement, received in 2001.
  • Kerrang! Hall of Fame and BPI Hall of Fame inductions, both in 2005.
  • Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2026, honoring the longtime lineup alongside former members.
  • Royal Mail postage stamps in 2023 and a Royal Mint 50th anniversary coin in 2025.
A 2012 British public poll also named The Number of the Beast the Best British Album Ever.

Who is Eddie, the Iron Maiden mascot?

Eddie, full name Eddie the Head, is Iron Maiden's macabre mascot, created by artist Derek Riggs and featured on the cover of nearly every release for more than 40 years. He began in the late 1970s as a papier-mâché stage mask that squirted fake blood and grew into a towering stage presence who prowls the set mid-song. Eddie's reach extends well beyond the stage: oversized Eddie puppets have appeared in carnival celebrations in Rio de Janeiro and other South American cities, fans voted to name the band's tour plane Ed Force One, and the Legacy of the Beast mobile game and comic series inspired a world tour. The fandom runs deep enough that nearly 200 tribute releases exist, spanning piano, string quartet, electro, and hip-hop reimaginings of the catalog. The band built all of it with little radio or television support, which makes the 130 million albums sold a measure of one of the most devoted fan communities in heavy music.
