Muse formed in Teignmouth, Devon, in 1994, when three schoolfriends turned a local battle-of-the-bands win into a full-time band. The lineup has stayed unchanged ever since: Matt Bellamy on lead vocals, guitar, and keyboards; Chris Wolstenholme on bass and backing vocals; and Dominic Howard on drums and percussion. Their sound sits at the intersection of alternative rock, progressive rock, and electronic rock, built around Bellamy's falsetto, Wolstenholme's overdriven fuzz bass, and Howard's expansive drumming. That combination has kept Muse tickets in steady demand across three decades of touring.
The band's debut, Showbiz, arrived in 1999, but 2001's Origin of Symmetry is the record that established their reputation for ambitious instrumentation and explosive live shows. Absolution followed in 2003 and became the first of seven consecutive UK number-one albums. Black Holes and Revelations (2006) pulled electronic and pop textures into the mix, while The Resistance (2009) and The 2nd Law (2012) pushed Muse into the top tier of global stadium acts. Drones (2015) topped the Billboard 200 in the US, and Simulation Theory (2018) leaned hard into synthesizers and science-fiction themes. Will of the People (2022) drew on sounds from across their catalog.
Muse's following took shape the old-fashioned way, through years of grassroots gigging before the arenas came, and it has stayed unusually engaged since. The band has handed setlist control to fans for special shows, including a 2018 date in Paris built from an online fan vote, and its live reputation has carried them to headline slots at Glastonbury Festival, Reading and Leeds Festivals, and Lollapalooza. Wembley Stadium, Madison Square Garden, and Rome's Stadio Olimpico have all hosted the band, and each stop draws a crowd that spans the early Origin of Symmetry era through the newer material.
