About Nate Bargatze

Nate Bargatze is a stand-up comedian from Nashville, Tennessee, born March 25, 1979, and live entertainment was the family business. His father, Stephen, worked as a magician and clown, and his mother, Carol, worked the ticket office for the Vanderbilt Commodores. Bargatze performed in church skits as a kid, then spent his early twenties in a run of regular jobs, including a stint as a water company meter reader, before quitting in 2002 to pursue comedy full time. He learned the craft in Chicago and New York, handing out flyers for stage time and doing sets for single-digit crowds while paying rent as a dog walker and FedEx driver.

The breaks stacked up slowly and then all at once. 2008 marked his first real momentum, with spots on Comedy Central's Live at Gotham, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and the Just for Laughs festival in Montreal. He toured with the USO, performing for American troops overseas, and won both the New York and Boston comedy festivals in 2010. His debut album, Yelled At By A Clown, arrived in 2012, and his first hour special, Full Time Magic, premiered on Comedy Central in 2015, with the album version hitting No. 1 on Billboard's comedy charts. The real inflection point came in 2017 with his episode of the Netflix series The Standups, which he has said changed everything. That set up the climb: The Tennessee Kid in 2019, named the best comedy special of the year by Forbes, and The Greatest Average American in 2021, which picked up a Grammy nomination.

From there, Bargatze took over the top of the genre. He hosted Saturday Night Live in 2023 and again in 2024, drawing attention for his deadpan George Washington sketches. Billboard's Boxscore recorded his 2024 run at $82.2 million across 148 shows and 1.1 million tickets sold, the largest one-year gross by a comedy performer in Boxscore history, and Pollstar ranked him the year's highest-grossing stand-up comic. His special Your Friend, Nate Bargatze won the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album. He hosted the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards in September 2025, and Billboard ranked his 2025 tour the highest-grossing comedy tour of the year at $56.7 million from 677,000 tickets across 76 shows. The expansion continued past stand-up: he co-wrote and starred in the film The Breadwinner in 2026, launched the ABC game show The Greatest Average American through his company Nateland Entertainment, and published the story collection Big Dumb Eyes in 2025.

Who is Nate Bargatze?

Nate Bargatze is an American stand-up comedian and actor from Nashville, Tennessee, known for clean, observational comedy delivered in a relaxed deadpan monotone. The son of a magician, he started performing stand-up in 2002, broke through to mainstream audiences with his 2017 set on the Netflix series The Standups, and became the highest-grossing stand-up comic of 2024, with more than a million tickets sold in a single year. The Atlantic has called him "The Nicest Man in Stand-Up," and he counts clean-comedy greats like Jerry Seinfeld, Steve Martin, and Brian Regan among his influences. His material leans on family, fatherhood, and the quiet absurdities of everyday American life.

What are Nate Bargatze's most popular stand-up specials?

Nate Bargatze has released five hour-long stand-up specials across Comedy Central, Netflix, and Amazon Prime Video, and each one moved his career forward:
  • "Full Time Magic" (Comedy Central, 2015), his first hour-long special, whose album version reached No. 1 on Billboard's comedy charts
  • "The Tennessee Kid" (Netflix, 2019), named the best comedy special of the year by Forbes
  • "The Greatest Average American" (Netflix, 2021), nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album
  • "Hello World" (Amazon Prime Video, 2023), which set Amazon's record for most-streamed original comedy special with 2.9 million viewers in its first 28 days
  • "Your Friend, Nate Bargatze" (Netflix, 2024), which won the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album
His 2017 half-hour on The Standups remains the set that changed the trajectory of his career, and a Comedy Central Presents episode in 2011 marked his first half-hour special.

What awards has Nate Bargatze won?

Nate Bargatze's biggest honor is the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album, which he won for his special Your Friend, Nate Bargatze. His other awards and nominations include:
  • A Grammy Award nomination for Best Comedy Album for The Greatest Average American in 2022
  • Two Primetime Emmy Award nominations in 2025, for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded) and Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special
  • Competition wins at both the New York Comedy Festival and the Boston Comedy Festival in 2010, early proof of the run to come
He also hosted the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards in September 2025.

What makes Nate Bargatze's fanbase distinctive?

Nate Bargatze's fanbase is unusually broad for stand-up: his clean, family-friendly comedy draws genuinely multigenerational crowds. He has said he became a clean comic so his parents could watch him perform, with the goal of the audience never noticing, so parents bring their teenagers and grandparents come along too. He also keeps politics out of his sets, sticking to marriage, fatherhood, and growing up in Tennessee, which gives his shows a communal, everyone-in-on-the-joke feel. Fans stay connected between tours through The Nateland Podcast, the show he launched in 2020 with fellow comedians; Dusty Slay joined the hosting lineup in 2022. His Tennessee roots show up in the numbers: in April 2023 he drew 19,365 fans to Nashville's Bridgestone Arena and broke the venue's all-time attendance record, then said he took a chair home from the arena so nobody could break it. He also donated $1.15 million to his alma mater, Donelson Christian Academy, which named its athletic facility after him. It adds up to one of the most family-friendly fan communities in comedy, and it shows in the ticket counts, with his tours selling more than a million tickets in a single year.
