Jack Johnson trades in the sound of the North Shore of Oahu, folding pop, rock, acoustic, folk, and surf rock into songs that move at the pace of a slow, glassy wave. Born and raised in Hawaii, the singer-songwriter has spent more than two decades turning that unhurried feel into warm, understated records that travel easily from porch speakers to amphitheaters. Jack Johnson tickets have long meant an evening of relaxed, singalong-ready songcraft, with setlists that pull from a catalog spanning his whole career.
Johnson learned to surf at age five on Oahu's North Shore and at 17 became the youngest invitee to reach the finals of the Pipeline Masters, one of the sport's most prestigious events. He picked up the guitar at 8, started writing songs at 12, and kept playing through college at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he played rhythm guitar in a band called Soil and graduated in 1997 with a degree in film studies. Music and film ran together from the start: he directed the surf films Thicker Than Water (2000) and The September Sessions (2002), and his first break as a songwriter came when G. Love recorded his song "Rodeo Clowns" for the 1999 album Philadelphonic.
The debut album Brushfire Fairytales arrived in 2001, produced by J. P. Plunier with a guest appearance from Ben Harper, and Johnson spent that spring opening the final 23 United States dates of Harper's tour. On and On followed in 2003 as the first album recorded at his Mango Tree Studio and the first released through what became his own Brushfire Records. The chart run then stacked up: In Between Dreams (2005) peaked at number two on the Billboard 200, Sing-A-Longs and Lullabies for the Film Curious George (2006) became the first animated-film soundtrack to reach number one since Pocahontas in 1995, Sleep Through the Static (2008) hit number one after a session powered entirely by solar energy, and To the Sea (2010) and From Here to Now to You (2013) also topped the chart. All the Light Above It Too (2017) debuted at number five for his seventh top five album, and Meet the Moonlight (2022), produced by Blake Mills, became his eighth studio album.
On the road, Johnson has headlined the Friday night of Coachella (2008) and stepped in as a last-minute replacement headliner at Bonnaroo (2013), and his 2022 Meet the Moonlight Tour covered 35 stops across the United States and Canada with Ziggy Marley on the bill. His records and tours have long featured drummer Adam Topol, bassist Merlo Podlewski, and Zach Gill of Animal Liberation Orchestra on keys. His story came full circle with the 2026 documentary Surfilmusic, which traced the path from Pipeline surfer to touring songwriter.
Offstage, Johnson has made environmental work part of the job. He and his wife Kim founded the Kōkua Hawai'i Foundation in 2003 to support environmental education in Hawaii's schools and communities and created the Johnson Ohana Charitable Foundation in 2008 to back environmental, art, and music education worldwide. He donated the entire proceeds of the 2008 Sleep Through the Static tour and steered the proceeds from the 2010 To the Sea tour to All at Once, a collaboration of greening charities built around fan involvement.
