The New York Knicks are one of basketball's foundational franchises, established in 1946 as a charter member of the Basketball Association of America. They have called Madison Square Garden home since 1968, sharing the arena with the NHL's New York Rangers in the heart of Manhattan. Alongside the Boston Celtics, the Knicks are one of two original NBA teams still playing in their founding city.
Three NBA championships define the franchise's legacy. The first two came in 1970 and 1973 under coach Red Holzman, powered by Hall of Famers Willis Reed and Walt "Clyde" Frazier. Reed's iconic return in Game 7 of the 1970 Finals, limping onto the court to score the team's first two baskets and inspire a 113 to 99 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers, remains one of the most celebrated moments in NBA history. The 1973 title featured the same core plus Earl Monroe, Dave DeBusschere, and Bill Bradley, defeating the Lakers again in five games.
The 1990s brought a new identity. Patrick Ewing, Charles Oakley, and John Starks turned the Garden into one of the toughest home courts in the league under coaches Pat Riley and Jeff Van Gundy. That era produced Finals appearances in 1994 and 1999, including a Cinderella run as an eighth seed in 1999. Then in 2026, Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, and Mikal Bridges ended a 53-year championship drought by defeating the San Antonio Spurs in five games. Brunson earned Finals MVP honors, and the team's 13-game playoff win streak ranked as the second longest in NBA history. Eight retired numbers hang in the Garden rafters, a reminder that this franchise has always attracted players who define eras.
