About Phish

Phish is an American rock band formed at the University of Vermont in Burlington in 1983, and for more than four decades the quartet has been organized around a single principle: no two shows are ever the same. Guitarist Trey Anastasio, bassist Mike Gordon, drummer Jon Fishman, and keyboardist Page McConnell fold funk, jazz fusion, progressive rock, bluegrass, psychedelic rock, and barbershop-style vocal harmonies into extended group improvisation. Part of a wave of improvisational rock acts inspired by the The Grateful Dead's live format, Phish ended 1997 among the ten highest-grossing concert acts in the United States.

Phish self-released its debut album Junta on cassette in 1989, the same year a sold-out show at Boston's Paradise Rock Club, a night the band rented outright after the club declined to book them, became their breakthrough on the Northeast circuit. Elektra Records signed the band in 1991, and the 1995 live album A Live One later earned Platinum certification in the United States and remains their best-selling release. Phish began a two-year hiatus in 2000, disbanded in 2004, and returned to the stage in March 2009 with three reunion shows at Hampton Coliseum in Virginia. The reunion era has produced some of the most ambitious runs in live music, including a 13-night Baker's Dozen residency at Madison Square Garden in 2017 that featured 237 different songs with zero repeats, plus a four-show stand at Sphere in Las Vegas in April 2024 that made Phish only the second act, after U2, to perform at the venue. The band has played more than 90 concerts at Madison Square Garden since its 1994 debut at the arena, second only to Billy Joel among musical acts.

A typical Phish show runs two long sets with an intermission, songs bleed into one another through improvisational jams that regularly stretch past ten minutes, and lighting director Chris Kuroda, nicknamed CK5 by fans and often called the band's unofficial fifth member, improvises a light show to match the music. Fans arrive hours before doors to turn the parking lot into its own community, and a designated tapers' section captures performances for free trading among collectors, a practice the band allows. Known as Phishheads, this following was built by word of mouth and the exchange of live recordings, and it fills venues decades into the band's run. For that crowd, a Phish ticket is less a seat at a concert than a pass to something that will never happen the same way twice.

Who are the members of Phish?

Phish has had the same four members since 1986, one of the most stable lineups in rock.
  • Trey Anastasio: guitarist and primary lead vocalist who composed The Man Who Stepped into Yesterday, the concept project behind the band's Gamehendge mythology.
  • Mike Gordon: bassist and vocalist who joined in 1983 after answering a want-ad Anastasio posted around the University of Vermont.
  • Jon Fishman: drummer, percussionist, and vocalist known for stepping out from his kit to sing covers and play a vacuum cleaner as an instrument.
  • Page McConnell: keyboardist and vocalist who joined in 1985 after arranging a Goddard College concert for the band.
Original guitarist Jeff Holdsworth left in 1986, and the lineup has remained unchanged since. Anastasio's childhood friend Tom Marshall has co-written the majority of Phish's songs.

What are Phish's most popular songs?

You Enjoy Myself is considered Phish's signature song, and Free stands as the band's most successful radio single, reaching No. 11 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart in 1996. Other well-known Phish songs include:
  • Down with Disease, the first Phish song to reach a Billboard chart, peaking at No. 33 on the Mainstream Rock chart in 1994.
  • Heavy Things, the band's only song to cross over to mainstream pop radio, reaching No. 29 on Billboard's Adult Top 40 chart in 2000.
  • Birds of a Feather, a No. 14 hit on Billboard's Adult Alternative Songs chart.
  • Possum and Harry Hood, live staples that have never appeared on a Phish studio album despite each being performed in concert more than 300 times.

What awards and recognition has Phish received?

Phish earned two Grammy nominations at the 43rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2001, and touring honors have accumulated across the band's four-decade run.
  • Grammy Awards: nominations for Best Boxed Recording Package for Hampton Comes Alive and Best Rock Instrumental Performance for First Tube in 2001.
  • Jammys: a Lifetime Achievement Award presented at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in 2008.
  • Rolling Stone: the magazine called Phish "the most important band of the '90s" in 1998.
  • Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: Phish received its first nomination in 2025.
  • Touring ranks: Pollstar tallied a $595.8 million gross and 13.3 million Phish tickets sold between 1980 and 2022, placing the band among the top touring acts of that span.

What is Phish fan culture like?

Phish fans, known as Phishheads, form one of the most dedicated traveling communities in live music, and the band's open taping policy helped build it. Phish allows audience recordings of its shows to be traded freely and non-commercially, which turned every concert into a collectible document and helped the band grow by word of mouth. Phishheads were early internet adopters too, organizing on the rec.music.phish Usenet group as early as 1992, and Phish was among the first musical acts to use the internet to grow its fanbase.
  • Tapers: a designated recording section at every show feeds fan collections that span entire tours and even entire years.
  • Setlist study: fans break down each night's improvisation using "Type 1" and "Type 2" jam categories first defined in a 1997 fan Usenet post.
  • Phish Food: the Ben & Jerry's flavor created with the band in 1997, the only product Phish has ever licensed its name to, with proceeds supporting the band's WaterWheel Foundation.
  • The Wilson chant: Seattle Seahawks fans adopted the song's opening as a chant for quarterback Russell Wilson, a tradition featured in an NFL Films documentary short.
Phish's own festival tradition helped shape the modern festival circuit as well, inspiring the creation of Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, which was first held in 2002.
