The Lion King San Diego tickets

The Lion King turned Disney's 1994 animated landmark into something the stage had never seen. Director Julie Taymor reimagined the film as living theater, with actors in animal costumes, giant hollow puppets, giraffes walking on stilts, and mechanical headpieces that rise and drop to make the lions feel real. The musical debuted at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis on July 8, 1997, opened on Broadway at the New Amsterdam Theatre that November, and moved to the Minskoff Theatre in 2006. More than 11,000 Broadway performances later, it stands as the third longest-running show in Broadway history and a flagship of Disney Theatrical Productions.

The score is what sets The Lion King apart from every other Disney stage adaptation. Elton John and Tim Rice's film songs sit alongside new material from Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Tsidii Le Loka, Julie Taymor, and Hans Zimmer, and much of the music is sung partially or entirely in African languages. That choral foundation, paired with Garth Fagan's choreography, gives the production a sound and a physical language all its own. The original Broadway cast recording captured it so well that it went platinum.

The reach is global. The London production opened at the Lyceum Theatre in October 1999 and has passed 10,000 performances, and stagings have appeared on six continents, including runs in Hamburg, Madrid, Paris, São Paulo, Shanghai, Sydney, Tokyo, and Johannesburg. More than 124 million people have seen The Lion King live. More than 25 years after its Broadway debut, the show remains a fixture of the theater landscape, and that endurance is why The Lion King tickets stay in demand wherever it plays.
