WWE SmackDown is one of professional wrestling's longest-running and most-watched weekly programs. The show debuted on August 26, 1999 on UPN, originally airing on Thursday nights as a complement to WWE Raw. The name itself comes from The Rock's signature catchphrase, "Layeth the Smack down," and the show quickly became UPN's highest-rated program, drawing roughly 6.5 million viewers in its first months on air. WWE SmackDown has since grown into one of the company's two flagship shows, broadcasting live every Friday night and reaching audiences across twelve countries.
The show's reach extends well beyond a single network. Over more than two decades, WWE SmackDown has aired on UPN, The CW, MyNetworkTV, Syfy, USA Network, and Fox before returning to USA Network in September 2024. International audiences can watch through Netflix in most markets outside the United States. The program has been taped and broadcast from hundreds of arenas across the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Italy, Spain, Ireland, and Australia. That global footprint gives WWE SmackDown tickets a unique draw for fans no matter where the show lands.
