North Carolina State Wolfpack Basketball History
College basketball has been a
huge draw on campus at North Carolina State since 1911 and in more than a century of competing, the program has been a part
of some of the most memorable moments in all of college hoops. The Wolfpack have been a member of the ACC since 1954 and have
won ten of their 17 conference championships as a member of the ACC. They are regular participants in the NCAA Tournament
and have won two National Championships, one in 1974 and then again in 1983. They have been part of two National Championship
Games, three Final Fours, and ten Sweet Sixteens. NC State have honored several different former players' jerseys but have
only retired one number over their long history, David Thompson's number 44. The NC State Wolfpack are always aiming to pull
off an upset of some of the powerhouse programs in the ACC like North Carolina or Duke and in recent years, as the Wolfpack
have proven themselves to be regular contenders for the conference title, the intensity of these games has only increased.
Of course another big rival of the Wolfpack is the Wake Forest Demon Deacons and whether the two schools are facing off on
the football field or the basketball court you can expect the rivalry to bring out the best from both sides. With all of the
new schools that joined the ACC last year and the addition of Louisville this year, the conference is only getting tougher
and you can be sure that new rivalries will emerge as NC State has more and more big games against the new members of the
North Carolina State Wolfpack Basketball Conference
College basketball is virtually synonymous
with the ACC and it is never easy for a team to navigate the tough conference schedule. Perennial powerhouses North Carolina
and Duke always are staunch competition and with the recent addition of Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Louisville, and Notre Dame to
the mix the conference is only getting tougher. Altogether the ACC has won 15 National Championships with North Carolina leading
the way with five. Schools from the ACC have reached the Final Four sixty times and are always making a big impact in the
Tournament. Playing such a tough regular season schedule annually leaves the teams from the ACC who are selected for the Tournament
ready to take on any college in the country and allows for even some of the lower seeds to pull off big time upsets. When
it comes to college basketball there is arguably no conference that is historically better or more dominant than the ACC.
College basketball is an experience like no other. Featuring some of the best student athletes
in the world along with some of the most passionate fans in all of sports, the games have an atmosphere that is unrivaled.

The North Carolina State
Wolfpack won the National Championship in 1983 when they scored an improbable victory over the heavily favored Houston Cougars
team that featured two future NBA Hall of Famers, Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler. The Wolfpack's coach at the time was
Jim Valvano, the legendary and inspirational coach who passed away from cancer in 1993, but was instrumental in the formation
of Coaches for Cancer and preseason basketball tournaments organized to raise money to battle cancer. A charity, The Jimmy
V Foundation was named in his honor.
