About Evanescence

Evanescence formed in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1994, when 13-year-old Amy Lee met 14-year-old guitarist Ben Moody at a youth camp and the two began writing music together within a month. As a duo they played acoustic sets at Little Rock bookstores and coffee houses and self-released EPs and a demo CD, imagining a sound they could not yet afford: strings, choirs, and the drama of a film score set against heavy guitars. They settled on the name Evanescence, a word meaning disappearance or fading away, and built the band on unlikely combinations, with Lee drawing on classical piano training, the film scores of Danny Elfman, and influences spanning classical, grunge, and electronica.

The breakthrough came fast. Wind-up Records signed the band in 2001 after its head of A&R heard the demos, and Fallen arrived in March 2003, carried by Bring Me to Life and My Immortal, both featured on the soundtrack of the film Daredevil. Bring Me to Life reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent four weeks at number one in the UK, and Fallen went on to sell more than 17 million copies worldwide while logging 43 weeks in the top 10 of the Billboard 200. At the 2004 Grammy Awards, Evanescence won Best New Artist and Best Hard Rock Performance. The Open Door followed in 2006, giving the band its first Billboard 200 number one on the way to more than six million copies sold worldwide, and the self-titled Evanescence album repeated the feat in 2011 as the first record written by the full band.

Evanescence went independent in 2014 and kept reshaping its own catalog. Synthesis (2017) rebuilt earlier songs into orchestral and electronic arrangements and sent the band on tour with live orchestras for the first time, and The Bitter Truth (2021) reached the top five of the Billboard Independent, Alternative, and Hard Rock charts. By 2022 the band had sold 31.9 million albums, ranking among the best-selling hard rock and metal artists of all time. The live show remains the centerpiece: at Download Festival in 2023, Evanescence played to what was considered the biggest crowd ever for the event's second stage, and the band's biggest solo headlining show took place at Allianz Parque stadium in São Paulo that same year. Rolling Stone credited the band with bringing theatrics and a much-needed femininity to the hard-rock boys' club of the early 2000s, and Kerrang! named Evanescence one of heavy music's most important and influential bands. That is the case for Evanescence tickets: gothic drama, classical grandeur, and heavy riffs delivered by one of the most distinctive voices in rock.

Who are the members of Evanescence?

Evanescence is a five-piece band anchored by Amy Lee, the founding lead singer and keyboardist who has fronted the group since 1994 and written the bulk of its catalog. The current lineup:
  • Amy Lee: lead vocals, piano, keyboards, and harp; the founder and the band's constant member since 1994.
  • Tim McCord: joined on bass in 2006 and moved to guitar in 2022.
  • Troy McLawhorn: guitarist who first joined the touring lineup in 2007.
  • Will Hunt: drummer, also part of that 2007 touring lineup.
  • Emma Anzai: bassist formerly of Sick Puppies, who joined in 2022.
The band began as a duo and became a full-band collaboration in 2009, which makes the 2011 self-titled album the first Evanescence record written together as a group.

What are Evanescence's most popular songs?

Evanescence's biggest songs are Bring Me to Life and My Immortal, the 2003 singles that carried Fallen around the world. The deeper catalog holds plenty more:
  • Bring Me to Life: number five on the Billboard Hot 100 and four weeks at number one in the UK, with a video that passed one billion YouTube views in 2022.
  • My Immortal: peaked at number seven on both the US Hot 100 and the UK singles chart.
  • Going Under: number five on US Modern Rock Tracks and number eight in the UK.
  • Call Me When You're Sober: the lead single from The Open Door.
  • What You Want: the first single from the 2011 self-titled album.
  • Wasted on You and Use My Voice: standouts from The Bitter Truth in 2021.
  • The Chain: a Fleetwood Mac cover that hit number one on Billboard's Rock Digital Song Sales chart.
Most fans holding Evanescence tickets come hoping to hear the Fallen-era songs above all, and the band has toured behind that catalog for more than two decades.

What awards has Evanescence won?

Evanescence has won two Grammy Awards, both at the 2004 ceremony: Best New Artist and Best Hard Rock Performance for Bring Me to Life. Beyond the Grammys, the accolades include:
  • Three Loudwire Music Awards.
  • A Kerrang! Award and a Revolver Golden Gods Award.
  • Rock Sound's 2023 Hall of Fame honor.
  • A Brit Award nomination, three American Music Award nominations, and five MTV Video Music Award nominations.
Combined with 31.9 million albums sold, the awards reflect a band whose influence on hard rock has long outlasted its breakout moment.

What is the Evanescence fan community like?

The Evanescence fan community grew organically around the music, starting with local radio play in Little Rock in the late 1990s and then going global when Bring Me to Life landed on the Daredevil soundtrack and listeners kept requesting it until radio stations reconsidered a female voice and piano on rock radio. Lee has said the soundtrack gave the band fans in countries it had never visited. She has kept a direct line to that base ever since, posting studio updates on the fan community site EvThreads and answering questions in a 2019 Reddit AMA, and the band has rewarded longtime collectors with The Ultimate Collection, a six-LP vinyl box set with a 52-page book of art, lyrics, and rarities. On the 2017 Synthesis tour, every Evanescence ticket included a digital copy of the album. Kerrang! has written that there is a timelessness about the band's sound that has barely dated over the last two decades, and the fans holding Evanescence tickets often arrived in completely different eras of that catalog.
