Foo Fighters formed in Seattle in 1994 as a one-man project. Dave Grohl, the former drummer of Nirvana, booked studio time that October and bashed out a batch of his own songs in a matter of days, playing nearly every instrument himself. The band name comes from "foo fighter", a World War II term for unidentified flying objects. What started as a private creative outlet grew into one of the most decorated rock bands of the modern era, with a sound built on alternative rock, post-grunge, hard rock, and big-hook pop rock.
The self-titled debut album arrived in 1995, and Grohl built a real band around the songs, with bassist Nate Mendel and guitarist Pat Smear joining early and the group playing its first show at the Jambalaya Club in Arcata, California that February. The hits stacked up quickly. "Learn to Fly" gave the band its first Billboard Hot 100 entry in 1999, "The Pretender" spent a record 19 weeks at number one on Billboard's Modern Rock chart in 2007, and Wasting Light, tracked in Grohl's garage on analog tape with producer Butch Vig, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 in 2011. The band kept evolving from there, from the eight-city HBO experiment behind 2014's Sonic Highways to 2017's Concrete and Gold, which featured Paul McCartney on drums and became their second U.S. chart-topper. Foo Fighters released their eleventh album, But Here We Are, in 2023, followed by Your Favorite Toy in 2026.
On stage is where Foo Fighters have always made their name. They headlined Wembley Stadium in 2008 with Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin sitting in, played London's Hyde Park in 2006 with guest spots from Queen's Brian May and Roger Taylor, and have repeatedly topped festival bills in England at Reading Festival, Leeds Festival, and Glastonbury. Their shows run long and deep: a 2012 club date in Charlotte stretched to nearly three and a half hours across 36 songs. Whether Foo Fighters tickets are for a stadium run or a surprise club set under an alias like The Holy Shits, the crowd knows every word.
